WTC 2017 – Prep and prayers

The WTC is coming up fast, and the team is ready for beer and happiness, but winning… maybe not so much. I usually predict the Danish teams to end up somewhere in the middle, with one team coming close to the top10 (we made it once!) but this year I think it’ll be rough.

My team is called Little Mermaids, and I’ll be very surprised if we don’t end up in the bottom half. The main Danish team (Asgaard) could do well enough, but the more likely outcome is around 20th place, give or take a few (They did wipe us 4-1 in our last trial matchup, with only yours truly taking a win).

So pretty!

I’m bringing Stryker2 and Nemo3 to the table, and I feel quite comfortable with my setup, especially after Haley2 got nerfed. Stryker2 is my main man, and he usually manages to pull me through when I fuck up, while Nemo3 is a great boogeyman and hard counters quite a few lists, making the matchup phase more interesting for me (Stryker2 doesn’t have many really shitty matchups, but the ones he has are REALLY shitty).

Stryker2
– Squire
– Centurion
– Centurion
– Ol’ Rowdy
Runewood
Strangeways
Journeyman
– Charger
Jakes
– Charger
– Charger
Sword Knights (Max)
Field Mechaniks (Min)

Nemo3
– Finch
– Squire
– Dynamo
– Centurion
– Centurion
Storm Strider
Storm Strider
Journeyman
– Firefly
Strangeways
Field Mechaniks (Min)

I find Centurions to be paramount to my success in SR17, as so many of the scenarios are extremely live, and double Centurions can hold 5/6 scenarios on their own. Combined with two ARM buffs, and Magnetic Hold from Nemo3, removing them from the zones can be a nightmare for many lists, but even with Stryker2 they do well enough. With Stryker2 I can often make people run/trample into the Centurions, which allows the Sword Knights to rip them apart without much damage to the Cents (Grymkin S&M might be the exception)

Centurions are gods!

The Stryker2 list is much better than it looks. I would really have liked Gibbs in it, but sadly that change did not arrive in time – or maybe never – but he works well enough without it. I find that I need to keep Stryker super safe without Gibbs, but then it’s fairly easy in this list. Heavies that are ARM 22-23 against shooting, Sword Knights that can be ARM 19 against shooting if that matters in the matchup, and if I’m facing a heavy gun line I can push a single Centurion to ARM 26 against shooting, and use that to hold a zone.

The triple Chargers do well against lights or Cavalry, and can be used as mobile Positive Charge beacons. The Sword Knights can become MAT 13 on the charge, which makes all the high def builds really sad, and with Strykers feat they can swing around those buffed swords a LOT of times in a single turn. The setup has several weaknesses, and doesn’t seem able to really play into Cryx (Ghost Fleet / Dark Host) or Issyria with double Strike Force, but both lists force some questions, and Stryker2 can always run at the enemy on full camp, and roll lucky to seal the game.

After three years away from the WTC, I’m mostly looking forward to seeing the people again, but the road trip, the games, and the atmosphere as a whole is not to be discounted!

  1. Hi, I’m Andrei from team Bears you played.
Looking forward to some fedback on your games ;)

  2. How did you make out? Looks like about a 50/50 for your team. Did that feel about right? Any changes you’d like to make based on the updated themes / personal experiences?

    • We went 3-3 and ended up 40/64 exactly like predicted! Changes would be to not play anything except power casters with great scenario presence, or simply switch to Cryx :)
