New Years tournament

Somewhat delayed we’re hosting a New Years mini tournament to try and get our meta rebooted after MK3. The Aarhus meta crashed and burned with MK3, going from around 20 active players, to about five, and a few more playing casual games at home. This weekend we’re trying to put together a tournament for eight people, and we’re up to six players now!

Fugging MK3

The tournament will most likely be more of a games day then, but I’m bringing my two mighty snowflake lists and treating it like a proper tournament anyway. The first list is my highly experimental Cryxnar list, in which I spam light jacks and melee weapon masters, backed up by recursion, and a powerful caster.

Lord Commander Stryker
– Reinholdt
– Thorn
– Lancer
– Lancer
Major Harrison Gibbs
Ragman
Archduke Runewood
Sword Knights (Leader & 9 Grunts)
Sword Knights (Leader & 9 Grunts)
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 5 Grunts)
Field Mechaniks (Chief & 3 Grunts)
Alexia Ciannor & the Risen (Alexia & 9 Risen)
– Captain Jonas Murdoch

The Sword Knights hit like laser guided trucks, with a staggering MAT 13 (hitting almost anything on 3+) and dealing 28 average damage on the charge, so not many need to make it across, and with three shock Shields the enemy cortex-boxes go bye bye with alarming speed. In my last game with three Lancers, my opponent didn’t have enough Cortex boxes left to kill them all.

Risen spawn like mad with that many corpses around, and they can be MAT 8 on the charge, and PS 11, so with CMA they actually hurt. I don’t know if it’s ‘amazing’ but it feels competitive so far, and much like Cryx in the good old days did.

Alexia is butch as fuck in this picture!

I had a bunch of Chargers and Fireflies in the first version of the list, but the +2 ARM of the Lancers really help with survivability in the first turns (ARM 20 under Deceleration), the increased DEF against charges help a LOT with survivability in the later turns, and the Arc Nodes allow for much easier access to Rebuke and Positive Charge where I need it.

I also needed my jacks to be fast with 2″ melee RNG, so I tried out three Lancers and loved them. I did really want Thorn in the list, so I’ve reduced the Trenchers to minimum and upgraded Lancer -> Thorn, and including Field Mechaniks to keep the Lancers topped up, but only time will tell if I need all the Trenchers to survive on the way in.

Snowflaaaake!

Backing up Stryker up we find the newly nerfed Caine2, which I haven’t actually had time to play since the nerf. I did have work done on a snowflake version, which I’ve tweaked to accommodate the new changes. I’m pretty sure this won’t end up being the final version, but it does look like a lot of fun.

Captain Allister Caine (Caine2)
– Reinholdt
– Centurion
– Defender
Journeyman Warcaster
– Defender
Rangers (Leader & 5 Grunts)
Ragman
Captain Arlan Strangeways
Rhupert Carvolo
Trencher Master Gunner
Gobber Tinker
Gobber Tinker
Horgenhold Artillery Corps
– Captain Jonas Murdoch
Horgenhold Artillery Corps

Instead of handling infantry by himself Caine now has pie-plate backup, with three 4″ blasts each turn, one of which has fully boosted damage. If the anti-infantry duties aren’t needed they can fulfill their real assignments, and blow massive holes in heavies.

I’ve had one game with my faction Artillery Corps, in which it did 18 damage to heavies and wiped out half a unit, and that was without the Trencher Master Gunner. The setup is expensive I know, and possibly not the best I could field, but man it’s fun.

  • Faction FFE HAC shot – deals 28 damage, hits DEF 19 with aiming + Rangers.
  • Faction TMG HAC shot – deals 24.5 damage, hits DEF 16 with aiming + Rangers.
  • HAC shot – deals 24.5 damage, hits DEF 14 with aiming

If I had room for a GMCA the accuracy could increase even further, but for now I’ll try this version first. Against stealth heavies Reinholdt can still assist, and the Defenders can add to the long range destruction.

Against a standard DEF 10 / ARM 20 heavy, the entire volley (with Defenders) deals 28 damage on average which is a LOT, and Caine can splurge for a single Griveous Wound shot to make sure it stays down, or I can spike and just nuke it from orbit (In my first game with the Doom Cannon I rolled 11 damage through the ARM of an ARM buffed Skorne heavy).
