For the last six months I’ve known that I couldn’t participate in the Danish Masters 2016 because of a scheduling conflict, but then on Monday night miracles happened. This means I can pack my bags and go play in the coming weekend, but it also means I have to borrow a fuckton of models since I have a grand total of two fully painted Cygnar models.
Captain Kara Sloan
The Sloan list is a bit different, and probably sub-par, but I just like the visuals of Cyclones so much, and they ARE quite amazing with her. It has quite a few bad match-ups, but the good match-ups are almost auto-wins.
The Armory also allows the list to play into some more matchups (Menoth mainly) depending on scenario, and the combination of Ragman and more focus to assign (Squire) allows the list to melee as a backup plan. This has been my most successful Cygnar list to date, and I can borrow all but the two Cyclones from a Cygnar buddy.
Major Victoria Haley
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Storm Lances (Leader & 2 Grunts)
I’ve given in and accepted, that if I want to play Sloan I need Haley2 to back her up. I’ve only played two games with the list. I threw the first game away, but only due to stupidity and lack of knowledge, and then I completely steamrolled the other game. I could of course play a carbon copy of Olannons list, but I don’t have quite the tactical mind he does, so I need some more tools.
I quite like her new version. She’s an entirely different model than she used to be, but her new function is quite nice. The first of them is to inflict a few d3 of damage on the enemy caster, which is what happens when the opponent wants to keep his upkeep spells. Sure it would be better to actually remove them, but with Purgation, Reposition3, and RAT 9 she can do d3 damage to the caster every turn from relative safety. Some casters really can’t afford that.
Another thing she does is reliable ranged disruption, which is quite good with all the jacks we see in Mk3. Combined with reposition, stealth, and high defense she can keep a heavy out of the game, or at least make an opponent spend a lot of effort getting rid of her. Finally she can pew pew a bazillion models in a spell heavy match-up (or stop entire units of spell casters from entering within 10″ of her), but that’s secondary to her two main functions. In a 6 point package that’s quite good, and if nothing else she can fairly reliably kill a few models to at least do something in a game.

While Olannon has tried solving the Wurmwood match-up with a Minuteman, I’ll be trying it with a GMCA. Assuming the stones are within 18″ of the GMCA he can walk up and Brutal + Flare them both. This should deal around 2 damage to each stone, and remove their stealth. The Stormwall can then land a boosted POW 15 on each, dealing 7-8 damage on average, giving me a fairly solid shot at killing both stones with one… stone… I know, kill me now. I can also try a Snipe + Flare which gives me lower odds of killing them both, but might allow me to keep the GMCA for later turns (handy since he still has the option of hiding things in his remaining forest).
The Firefly with Temporal Acceleration has been amazingly fun in the two games I’ve had so far. The Stormwall pops a pod, and the Firefly shoots it twice for 2d3 leaps. In the Wormwood matchup I also have the option of waiting for his feat, then counter feating and running the Stormwall in (assuming I’ve gotten rid of Lanyssa or if she’s out of position). Stormwall can be seen above everything, including the feat forest, and then I can bounce leaps and generator from it to at least do something on his feat turn.
Will it work!
No. I am so incredibly rusty, and in last weekends mini-tournament I forgot basic rules, messed up placement, and generally derped my way to the finals. If my first opponent hadn’t timed out, and my second opponent hadn’t been a Sloan auto-win, I would have gone 0-3 instead of losing the deciding game. I’m going over there to chip away some rust, and unless I luck out completely I’m going to end up in the bottom half!
