All theory and no play make Lamoron something something

It’s been a while since my last game, and since that game ended in a loss I should have avoided I’m eager to get some more games in. I’ve been considering what Nosuchmethod said in a comment, about Sloan actually being my weak point in a steamroller pairing, not because she’s a bad caster but because she’s so skew. The solution escapes me, but I did come up with a list I want to try for her, which should give every opponent setup fits as well, basically turning every match-up process into list chicken.

Captain Kara Sloan
– Reinholdt
– Stormwall
– Stormwall
Arlan Strangeways
Ragman
Stormcallers (3)
Stormcallers (3)
Field Mechaniks (Crew Chief & 3 Grunts)

Twin shooty Colossals turns Kara into double skew. With the twin Stormpods and 6 Stormcallers I can both have my covering fire cake, and eat enemy infantry with eighteen range 20 shots, unless I really need the firepower – like on feat turn – where 4d3 shots at RNG 10+2 / POW 10 can mow down all the infantry the Stormcallers miss. The Stormcallers also handily ignore elevation and concealment, which complements the twin True Sight Colossals.

The Stormwalls with Ragman also solves much of the ARM skew issues, and ARM 21+ doesn’t really scare this list that much. This list also plays well into Lylyth3 I think, as three fully boosted POW 15 shots, and a shitload of POW 10s should make her careful about placement. To back her up I’ve been messing around with a new and improved Stryker3 list, which should make ARM skew all but impossible to drop into my setup, and infantry spam might have to think twice as well.

Lord General Coleman Stryker
– Stormwall
Runewood
Arlan Strangeways
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper
Alexia 1
– Murdoch

That’s almost 40 models AND a Colossal. I couldn’t find points for Ragman, but I think the ARM cracking is acceptable anyway. Alexia1 gives me disposable bodies to fire at enemy screening models before sending in the Fury Trenchers, and on feat turn they’ll hit automatically and do fair damage. In theory I could perform the ‘out of formation Alexia’ trick, but I think I want Fury up on Trenchers from the beginning instead (despite the DEF loss it entails).

The list still has some serious activation sequence issue I haven’t been able to iron out yet, which is mostly that Stryker3 really wants two activations in order to get his spells and feat where they need to be. Stryker is also a focus short of where I’d like him to be, and with a lower control area, but finding five points for a Squire is all but impossible. I do have another build in mind, spamming Chargers, or Chargers and Grenadiers, but I’m having trouble tying that together as well.

Lord General Coleman Stryker
– Squire
– Charger
– Charger
– Charger / Grenadier
– Charger / Grenadier
Ragman
Alain Runewood
Arlan Strangeways
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper

Eight points left over. I quite like this build as it has incredible medium power/range firepower and punches anything that survives to death. Long range opponents will have trouble hitting the Trenchers without aiming, and if they aim a lot they’ll have trouble with scenario. This build has less order of activation issues, but the lack of an anchor model like the Stormwall or a heavy might be problematic.

Lord General Coleman Stryker
– Squire
– Charger
– Charger
– Charger
– Centurion
Ragman
Alain Runewood
Arlan Strangeways
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper
Trencher Infantry (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Officer & Sniper

A little less firepower but a solid melee anchor in the Centurion with Escort to back it up. I don’t have a source of Arcane Shield though, but as always I find myself lacking those last 4-6 points to make my lists come together. Bah, one day…

  1. Nice! Definitely an interesting idea to run Sloan with double stormwall; it feels pretty strong (albeit with very few models).

My thought process on Kara has actually been totally the opposite direction, trying to offset her shooting skew (and/or buy time to shoot more) with a big blob of self-sufficient infantry.

    Kara Sloan
    – Defender
    – Defender
    – Minuteman
    – Hunter
    Maxwell Finn
    Alexia
    Trencher Infantry (max)
    Nyss Hunters (max)

Haven’t playtested it yet though, been having too much fun with Darius. ;-)

    • I think Darius is super neat, but I don’t own him so a bunch of other stuff got in front of him in the line. What’s the list like?

      • With Darius? I’m still in the “changing it up every game to see what I like” phase, but the one I’m running right now is:

        Darius + Halfjacks
        – Squire
        – Thorn
        – Hammersmith
        – Reliant
        – Reliant
        – Firefly
        – Ol’ Rowdy
        Lanyssa Ryssyl
        Anastasia
        GMCA x2
        Gunmage Rifleman

I feel like it may need a little more defensive tech for Darius himself, but it’s hard to give up a heavy to squeeze it in.

        • Double Reliants… bold choice! I keep looking at them and thinking they need +1 POW on their guns to really be attractive. I want to like them, I really do!

          • Yeah, the double Reliant is an odd one, not sure it will stay in. Keep in mind the firefly means they’re shooting at POW 15 when it matters.

In this list, they fit a niche (in part because of their price point). I initially had a mix of almost all melee heavies, which was (as expected) very skewed… you’d steamroll a lot of lists that couldn’t deal with the armor, but then get totally locked out by hard control or infantry spam.

The Reliants serve as backup jack bullets almost as well as an Ironclad or Hammersmith would in the same place, but the covering fire and ranged power let you play a little cagier when needed. I’m pretty well convinced you need to bring at least two of them to make it worthwhile though. With just one, the covering fire template is meaningless.
