Cygnar: First list

I have roughly two weeks to get my new Cygnar army ready for the next major tournament, which is the WTC qualifiers in which my team is there to make it an even number. I don’t really participate in team tournaments any longer, but I made an exception as our team is not there to win – but only to make sure no team gets a ‘bye’ during such an important tournament.

very…

My team will consist of Denmarks most rusty Menoth player, a guy who only recently picked up Legion, and myself with Cygnar which I – at this point – have never actually played. What I’m getting at here is that winning even a single round is highly unlikely, much less doing well in the tournament as a whole, which is why I agreed in the first place.

I have properly named our team ‘Pigs Might Fly‘ as it’s a fairly accurate description of what our chance of winning looks like, but it might happen. Personally I’ll be satisfied if we lose every round and get absolutely shitfaced in the process, but I’ll take a win if someone gives me one!

Exactly as planned!

I’ve been messing around with lists and I think I’ve come up with a workable Haley1 list. This list is probably (certainly) not optimal, but my collection of Cygnar is quite limited and I’ve already spent my budget making the most required purchases.

Captain Victoria Haley
– Sentinel
– Squire
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages (Leader and 5 Grunts)
– Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
– Captain Jonas Murdoch
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Steelhead Halberdiers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Steelhead Heavy Cavalry (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Tactical Arcanist Corps
Sergeant Nicolas Verendrye
Ragman
Rhupert Carvolo

The idea is to use the two main ranged units (Nyss & ATGM) to engage and destroy the enemy ranged threats (using my feat), while advancing the entire list up the field. At some point I’ve probably lost the ranged exchange – and probably the game – or I’m forcing my opponent to wander into my alpha, and boy what an alpha it will be.

The Steelhead Heavy Cavalry with concealment and Arcane Shield + Defensive Line will be hard to eliminate without losing the ranged battle entirely (and with ride-by attacks and Dead Eye they can even help with a bit of shooting), so I’m confident a couple of them will be alive to charge, and with Kiss + Dark Shroud + Temporal Barrier the counter attack should be accurate and deadly.

In addition whatever survived of the Nyss should be able to join the fray and with TB they might actually land those weapon master attacks. This is a list I’m looking forward to playing, and while it will probably need tweaking that will have to wait until I have more options to pick from.

The second list is not coming together though, and even though I’m pretty sure it’ll be Caine2 I’m awaiting another helpful player who’s looking through his piles to see if he has anything beyond the Rangers I could get for almost free.

  1. Hey,
a friend of mine asked me, what I thought about your list and since I was thinking about it anyways, I might as well bounce some ideas back to you as well. While I am not a world class player and I don’t know what match ups you want to play this list in, I still thought you might like some feedback.

Overall I think it’s a fun list and can be certainly viable (especially in a team tournament) as long as you can dogde certain match ups.
This list will do great against most infantry spams and just sweep them of the board! That’s Cygnar does pretty well.
In my opinion your abilitiy to crack armor is a bit weak. I know you have Ragman and Ayiana to help with that, but as soon as your opponent can counter your Steelhead boat or has a stealth heavy or really more than one you’ll have to work really hard to get it of the board without loosing to much.
And while you have a Sentinel and the TAC in your list Haley is really vulnerable (upkeep AS+TB+Deadeye=7 Focus), because she has to be forward enough to catch your opponent in your TB bouble.
Which brings me to the “Steelhead problem”. The offensive part (flank and either Ayiana or Ragman) is pretty solid, but I kinda worry about the defensive part. Idk if the TAC is a bit slow for them (the kav) but eEiryss/upkeepremoval and boostable guns can really ruin your kav…and hurt your late game. But to be honest, idk how much the Nyss can help out there, so you migth be ok on that front.
I guess the baseline of what I am trying to say is, I think that the list can work, but has to be played very accurately and well, as your caster and important elements are not that survivable.

now that has been enough critique and I want to end with some positive thoughts.
Welcome to Cygnar and I hope you have fun and good games with your list(s) :)
looking forward to some reports (in case you write them)

    • Thank you for the insights. I’m pretty sure my second list will be Caine2 to counter most of the matchups you describe, but I’ve also run into an activation sequence issue where Haley wants to activate both before and after the Steelheads. I’ll get back to you after an actual game :D
