Traitor to the cause: Cygnar on a budget

I’ve been considering a little vacation with Cygnar while we wait for the new Cryx releases to arrive, and during this weekends convention in Lund I won some Cygnar models. I decided then and there that now would be a good time to play Cygnar, but that I would do it for an absolutely minimal investment (as close to free as I can possibly get).

Over the years I’ve won quite a few models in different tournaments, and since I own everything worth owning in Cryx I mostly just picked up mercenary models I might one day use, so I can almost field an entire Cygnar army already, and then I remembered that a friend of mine bought some Cygnar back in 2011 but never really got into Warmachine, so he’s coming over with those models tonight (excited to see what’s in his collection).

My turn now!

As a Cryx player I will of course be playing Haley1 as my first caster, because nothing annoys me more than her and I want to play that. Not having access to a Stormwall made me get creative, and while this is all theory-machine I think it might actually work. Remember that these lists are not made to be optimal, but to be optimal considering the models I have access to with minimal purchases required.

Captain Victoria Haley
– Sentinel
– Squire
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages (Leader and 5 Grunts)
– Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Captain Jonas Murdoch (not yet acquired)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Steelhead Halberdiers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Steelhead Heavy Cavalry (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Tactical Arcanist Corps (not yet acquired)
Sergeant Nicolas Verendrye
Rhupert Carvolo

The list can shoot like crazy, and on feat turn the number of shots becomes absolutely ridiculous (around 50). The Steelhead Cavalry with Arcane Shield and Defensive Line, using Dirge of Mist and clouds from the TAC are a DEF 16 / ARM 21 wall of tough for Haley to hide behind, which makes sense since she’ll be at 0-1 focus on many turns.

Yeah boys!

Once the enemy actually arrives he will have to deal with the charge of all the surviving Nyss and Cavalry. Nyss are weapon masters and with both Kiss and Dark Shroud in the list they hit like Bane Thralls (and accurately because of TB), but the real kicker is the Steelhead Cavalry which can all do insane amounts of damage with Flank/Dark Shroud/Kiss/TB/Dead Eye.

  • Impact Attack, effective MAT 9, POW 14 WM
  • Assault Shot, effective RAT 7 (Boosted), POW 16
  • Charge attack, effective MAT 11, POW 17 WM
  • Back Swing, effective MAT 9, POW 15 WM

I’ve tried this in Cryx but one key component was missing, and Arcane Shield just turns them up to 11. Every shot an opponent tries to land on the Cavalry is a shot he’s not using to win the ranged exchange with my Nyss/GM which should also play to my advantage. I really wanted a Journeyman Warcaster in the list for Arcane Shield on the Halberdiers as well, but I can’t find the points without compromising the list.

I can get the TAC for less than 30 dollars, Jonas Murdoch for around 13, and I think this might be money I’ll have to spend since the models are new(ish) and unlikely to be in someones old and dusty collection. Now the second list is likely to be something weird, but probably Cain2 since I already own him and I think he might work with a weird setup (and I own Boomhowlers).
