The Soul Weaver: Part 7

I’ve had another couple of games with the Soul Weaver (all wins), and I’ve finally settled on a list I think emphasizes her strengths and abilities, while reducing the problems she faces on the table as well. I’m utterly flabbergasted at the number of people who can’t get her to work, but I guess that’s the nature of the game: not everything works for everyone. With that in mind I present my finished product.

Denghra, the Soul Weaver
– Helldiver
– Helldiver
– Helldiver
– Helldiver
Mechanithralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Skarlock Commander
Mechanithralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Skarlock Commander
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Necrosurgeon (Necrosurgeon & 3 Stitch Thralls)
Necrosurgeon (Necrosurgeon & 3 Stitch Thralls)
The Withershadow Combine
Gorman di Wulfe
Ogrun Bokur
Ragman
Soul Trappers (2)
Soul Trappers (2)
Skarlock Thrall

I’ve finally decided that I simply cannot afford having an Arc Node that won’t really do anything in half my games. I find myself missing them in the other half of my games, but with a bit of planning you can work around it with ride-by attack, and it allows for more models that actually do something.

  • Helldivers

The Helldivers are core models. The Soul Weaver turns them up to over 9000, and without them the list would probably be better served with another caster anyway. I’ve had opponents describe it as a second clock counting down, as the murderpod makes its way towards their caster. I estimate that roughly half my games have been won by the Helldivers, either directly by caster kill or indirectly by slamming models or just eating them.

  • Mechanithralls + Commanders + Necrosurgeons

These are the bread and butter of the list. I’ve experimented with other modules – like Bane Thralls – but I find the threat extension of Necrosurgeons – and the sheer number of models – vital in a list with no other way of increasing threat, and which has 12 points burrowed beneath ground for most of the game.

  • Nyss Hunters

I tried several games without them, but the lack of a credible ranged threat made it difficult to apply pressure on my opponent, and I found the ability to load up the Soul Trappers incredibly useful. You might notice that none of their normal support models made the cut, but the Nyss Hunters don’t really need them for the jobs I have them perform.

  • The Withershadow Combine

Another automatic inclusion with The Soul Weaver. I tried without them but the jump from ARM 22 to 23 is enormous, and without them I would need Blood Witches – as the wrong upkeep spell can end her game with one stroke – and I would need to play cautiously with them, so I prefer the ranged threat and reliability of the WSC.

  • Gorman

The entire list depends on Mortality to land hits on anything with a defensive stat above twelve, and sometimes I need to land those hits to guarantee some souls before activating Deneghra. There are no real targets for his smoke bomb, and he’s rarely alive to utilize the Acid – unless he’s bombing my own guys for corps tokens to launch with the Necrosurgeons – so he’s mostly there for the accuracy increase. He’s the only two points in the list I could possibly play around with, but I like him too much and Rust bomb helps against the high ARM colossals.

  • Ogrun Bokur

The Bokur is essential for the list. I know some people have been playing without one, but I don’t like having my opponent dictate where I can or cannot go, using nothing but a three point elven hooker, and the one shot he tanks can also negate several Legion assassinations. I think the Bokur enabled maybe a quarter of my wins, so think really hard before you discount him.

  • Ragman

Hard to use but excellent when he works. Ragman can start the turn sixteen inches from the target you’re going to hit with Deneghra3, and combined with Mortality she’ll be hitting at POW 17 which is enough to crack most casters. It’s not that the list is pillow fisted, but Ragman allows you to roundhouse colossals or eat heavies with your Helldivers, which is always a surprise for the poor opponent who thinks they’re only there for caster kills.

  • Soul Trappers

They’re just so good with her. For the longest time I used six of them, but four is enough against most lists and I really needed that last point. Never forget that these guys can kill things as well, and if they get loaded up with souls they can do two fully boosted attacks (charge, boost, gain a soul, buy, boost, and boost) which will catch a LOT of people by surprise as well.

  • Skarlock

Applies Grave Wind on the first turn, and Ghost Walk on every other turn. Occasionally I’ve used it to apply Mortality but it’s rare. Without the Skarlock her activation sequence becomes incredibly rigid, and you really have to make sure it sticks around.

  1. Hi, whats the part with ragman and 16 inches away? He has 6 speed and 3 inch deatch field? Thanks

  2. Fine, I’ll be the first to comment.

That looks like a damn sexy list and actually makes me want to buy the Soul Weaver. I’ll admit to being on the Doom Train when she came out because of the “D” name that they misprinted on her card, but your Murderpod experiences sound like a ton of fun and something that I would like to play. Y’know, if I didn’t have a five month old miniature (and male) version of my wife that I spend all of my time keeping alive. But here’s to an amazing caster that finally gives Cygnar something to think about. May she always be considered underwhelming so that the Swans don’t know what’s coming.

    • You could try painting the problematic miniature and putting it on the table… it would probably solve your problem, as you’ll likely have way more time to game afterwards! :D

  3. i’ve been using your Soul Weaver list with the 3 units of Mcthralls and I didn’t like the spam of 30 Mcthralls and felt it was missing something i looked at using BW+Hag but the Nyss makes a better choice for filling up the tappers,

The BW’s Death strike with Mortality is great and watching your opponent face as your BW’s kill 15 to 20 models then go incorp is priceless ;)

love the list and will try it out tomorrow night.

  4. you mentioned killing your own models to get souls. i thought only enemy models gave souls.

  5. Do you run the dirt dolphins if you go first? so 10 inches on the field, next turn burrow?
