Un-Mothballing: Part 5

Having locked in the Skarre2 list for Giant Fanatic I thought I was done, but every time I looked at my beloved Deneghra1 list I had doubts… I might have co-invented it, but everyone and their grandmas played it at the WTC, and it’s just not mothballed now is it.

I’ve been going back and forth on the issue ever since, but today Mercury asked me in the comments if the setup (Skarr2/Deneghra1) even really complimented each other. Well in some ways they do, as they’re both ranged lists, where one is ranged with endurance and the other is ranged with massed infantry, but while I thought about it I had a moment.

ALL THE PONIES!

I would only have to paint four models to be able to field my Goreshade3 list with all the ponies. It was supposed to be for an Oktoberfest tournament, but fuck it he’s coming to Giant Fanatic as well. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the red dawn. Forth, Cryxians!!!

Goreshade, Lord of Ruin
– Ripjaw
Bane Riders (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Soulhunters (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Steelhead Halberdiers (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Steelhead Heavy Cavalry (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Darragh Wrathe
Madelyn Corbeau, Ordic Courtesan
Sergeant Nicolas Verendrye
Stannis Brocker
Skarlock Thrall

Bane Riders are 12/18, Steelhead Cavalry are 13/18 with Verendrye behind them, and the Soulhunters can have Occultation if they need it. I doubt it’s going to be truly effective, but as this is the year of fuck-it, I’ll just go ahead and bring it to the big boys league!

  1. You have no idea how happy it makes me to see you use Steel heads.

  2. Did you decide to make any changes to the Skarre2 list, or are you locking it in as-is?

    • With only a week to go I better be locking the Skarre2 list! I get to test the Cavalry list tomorrow, though it’s against Cryx which it is most certainly not supposed to be fighting, but at least I can get a feel for it :D

  3. Done painting the cavalry list (pics on twitter tomorrow), though Madelyn Corbeau could use a new layer of paint… she’s from my old ‘get’id’done’nau’ period, where i couldn’t care less about quality, as long as it was considered painted at tournaments :D

  4. Thx for the games, mate!

I think this list has some potential – It has a lot of scenario pressure.

    Cheers,
    Jan

    • It’s a silly list and you know it, but I only need one gun-line opponent to field it against! :D

      • Yeah I know it – but it felt like having some play possibilities. I´f you weren´t un-mothballing and dusting off I would recommen that you switched out the steelheads (Stannis, Verendrye, Halberdiers and Cavalry) for some heavies – Perhaps a Harrower on Goreshade and a Leviathan on Aiakos?
It would still be a bit unconventionel :) But much better IMO.

        • In the list below I switched out the ripjaw as well, but I know it is a model you have seldomly used:

Goreshade3 (1st turn: Fcus to Harrower and three mockery Mcthralls. 2nd turn: 2-3 Mockery, scything/infernal/focus to Harrower and so forth).
          – Harrower (Not a focus hungry jack, with a decent ranged game and anti infantry abilities.)
          Aikakos
          – Leviathan (Ranged game with 3 fokus each turn)
          Darragh Wrathe
          Madelyn Corbeau/Warwitch Siren
          Minimum MCThralls
          Necrosurgeon and stitch thralls
          Maximum Soul Hunters
          Maximum Bane Riders

          • I’m considering switching the caster to Deneghra1 for GF, then I can always lose spectacularly at the Oktoberfest tournament with Goreshade3. Triple Cavalry with Deneghra1 seems a lot better than with G3.

          • I would tend to agree on that point (put the Cav under Denny). Triple cav with Horseshade doesn’t leave a lot of room for chaff for the feat, and Curse of Shadows and Scything Touch can only be in so many places at any given moment.

I know they just got beat up something fierce by the errata, and lord knows there isn’t time to get the requisite practice in, but what about the Witch Coven? They hide your fragile Steelheads, Curse of Shadows for the Steelhead Cav, Veil of Mists for the Bane Cav, Soulhunters are incorporeal. That’s three units of cav that can move through enemy models. As always, when in doubt, Deneghra, but us readers exist to complicate your life with possibilities.

          • Asphyxious1 might also be an option. Triple Cavalry just isn’t that good, but it sure is fun watching your entire army die to melee reprisal after the charge turn :D

I still have a week to paint if I get another fun idea… perhaps one that works this time! :D

          • I wonder if I could borrow the models I need for Asphyxious1 Scavengers T4. That would be 4-5 Slayers and perhaps 30 Scrap Thralls. 12 +6d6 Scrap Thralls could be very silly. Then field it in a scenario with Fuel Cache and send 6-7 Slayers running in, backed up by a swarm of Scrappies!

          • So I have 1-4 Slayers, depending on the amount of work I put in over the coming week. I need seven, and the first attending Cryx player to respond had 0 painted Slayers.

Then potentially I could have 72 Scrap Thralls on the table at one time, so realistically and averagely I need around 35-40. I own 15, I have one guy willing to lend me 9, so I just need another full set to land me at 33 which could be enough.

The Slayers though… tough to find in Denmark :D
