Un-Mothballing: Part 3

I had the chance to play a couple of games with my newly created Asphyxious2 list and it was horrible. The list itself had no synergy or flow, but worst of all… it was boring. Asphyxious2 can sod off back to his drawer, but maybe it’s time to bring out Skarre2. I never really could get her to work in the old days, but she’s certainly amongst my mothballed casters and my Bloat Thralls deserve a chance to abuse Black Spot.

Skarre, Queen of the Broken Coast
– Deathripper

Aiakos, Scourge of Meredius
– Kraken

The Kraken always felt a little underwhelming, and it’s been a long time since I took it out for a spin. I’ve actually never had it on Aiakos before so that’s something I have to try (I’m sure I can find something else in my Deneghra1 list where he usually resides). That’s a huge potential for explosions, but of course the nine obligatory Scrap Thralls for even more explosive goodness, and a Skarlock to save her some focus on the Admonition & Death Ward castings.

Deathjack is also a mothball model for me (yes really) and I can never get him to work properly, so he needs to be there of course, and then we need some Necrotechs to repair the two big morons (and bring more Scraps to the party!). I still have two points left, but what to spend them on… probably Ragman, just so we can actually beat up the enemy big’uns since there’s no upkeep removal in the list.

That looks hilarious. It’s either big and beefy or blows up in your face, and the Deathjack can throw Scraps at things if he doesn’t feel like engaging. Now to find someone who brought a bunch of low ARM melee troops so I can blow him up good!

  1. Lamoron, you miiiiiiight be suffering from some form of dementia. What kind of mothballs do you have over there? At the very least can you be convinced to drop two techs for a surgeon? You’re going to be cutting for upkeeps and a feat after all.

    • Hmm, is healing her really that important? I’ll keep it in mind during the first test and see how much I miss it.

      • Having played it both ways, I’d say it’s really nice to have (even if not strictly mandatory). Feat taking 5 damage and 1 per upkeep can really drain your lifeblood pretty fast, and it ensures that certain weapons (like stray AOEs…) are a lot less scary.

But I agree that it’s less “duh” than say, your typical pSkarre build, where the grunts are Rit Sac fodder and you still could use the healing from the feat. Not to mention that pSkarre is slightly more likely to bringing McThralls anyway :)

  2. I would try and free up two points to upgrade the death rippers to defilers, block spot sprays are amazing

  3. I’m actually trying her out as well at the moment, allthough my list is a bit different :)

  4. I’m guessing people are forgetting about a steelhead boat with Sergeant V…

  5. Steelhead Halberdiers are an insane value in cryx.
Reach, CMA provide a soul+corpse for sudden but inevitable betrayal…for 6 points

Riflemen should just be friendly faction cryx models an this point.

    • I have two full units of cavalry, Stannis, and a unit of Halberdiers. They’re one of my long term projects where I collect models whenever something goes on sale really cheaply, so it might take a while since nobody seems to be selling Riflemen cheaply :D

    • You realize that we don’t collect friendly souls, right? Corpses, yeah, but that’s hardly ever worth killing your own doods for. Halberdiers are great. Press Gangers are also great. Mechanithralls are ALSO great. They all fill different roles and they don’t really step on each other’s toes. Do you need a reach unit to engage everything? Halbs. Do you need a fast unit that has tough to be super annoying (and built in RFP)? PGs! Do you need a cheap unit that hits like a ton of bricks? McThralls. I just spent two games fielding Mechanithralls for the first time and I’ve been nothing but impressed with their output, no need to discount their quality.

  6. If you were in America and fairly local id give you my spare unit.

Halberdiers are the better McThrall. Im trying to encourage that idea.
(Dont give me that crap about Neurosurgeon recursion. Great spend more points on salvaging fodder models)

If you’re truly into dusting off the old glory…
    Asphyxious1 would like a word.

    • I’ve been thinking the same thing about gaspy lately. Fir some reason my games with him are really enjoyable. Hes also a good answer to all of the armour skew tgats going around.

      • I’ve actually never played him for real. Only in a couple of proxy low point games. I’ve been thinking about giving him a spin at 50 points.

        • He’s a great caster. He’s a tiny bit limited in his list-choices as he can’t increase accuracy, and he needs some help not dying to guns if the terrain doesn’t allow for teleports to safety, but he’s super underrated and I like him a lot.

          • I suppose we are looking at a list of, more or less, self helping units/models. Witches, Raiders, banes + BLT, Soulhunters and Bane Riders. A bit support of some sort + a couple of nodes and maybe a shield guard.

Your pAsphyxious model is super cool btw. If I ever decide to play him for real, I will have to steal that idea :)

    • Asphyxious1 was on the table in last weeks 2v2 tournament which we won, so he’s already been un-mothballed :D

  7. Maaan, mothballed DJ? I never stopped playing mine,

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, though… I remember you writing an article ripping on the Deathjack back when he was still widely considered cryx’s MVP… probably a few years back.

Looking forward to seeing if you continue with that pGaspy experiment – I’ve always loved that guy.

  8. Lamoron- Venethrax called. He feels left out.

Gaspy1- is an amazing caster. He was just waiting for certain releases to make him shine.
Bane Riders fix a goodly number of his problems.
He’s one of the casters I feel 1000% confident droping into MMM.
Also his favorite unit of infantry is a gorger boat (or boomhowlers if you swing that way)
    Gorgers + scything touch. Trololol

    • I found Bloodgorges too squishy with him, and Blood Witches a better match. If the gorgers ever get that UA with Battle Driven I suggested to PP, you’ll see Asphyxious1 double gorgers for sure.

  9. How are gorgers squishy? You have BoC? Block LOS for days.

    • BoC needs a target, you can’t just place them like Caustic Mist. It’s much less reliable for protection. Even if you could place them, two 3″ clouds is hardly “blocking line of sight for days.”

      • Since soul collectors came out If not has the issue not being able to at least drop 3 when I need. I use my own model to ping BoC off. Mcthralls scrap thralls machine wraiths or soul collectors.
I just dont see gorgers being super squishy.
Gang + Scything Touch + Parasite shreds anything ive found.

        • I in no way meant to imply that Gorgers can’t tear shit up… I fondly remember a Karchev player writing them of as anti-infantry models… the look on his face.

I just don’t think spending everything I have on killing my own models in order to make a cloud wall is optimal when I can have Blood Witches with more utility, better defenses, and 10.5″ threat against any target instead.

  10. Fair points Lamoron maybe Im just enamored of medium and Large base infantry when my caster is on a medium.
    Back to the topic…

PGaspy is THE hidden gem that people forgot about. He’s not flashy, nor is he a feat with legs. He just gets the job done.
He just needs accurate infantry that dont care about terrain. Been so tempted to run

    PGaspy
    Cankerworm
    Deathripper
    Deathripper
    Skarlock
    Nyss Hunters Full
    Bane Riders Full
    Also
    Assorted support solos

    • Bane Riders are pretty darn awesome with him. Ghost Walk built in, accuracy built in, and a high enough damage that his 5 point ARM swing turns them into nutjob killing machines.

      • Dont forget about nyss hunters under him.
Weaponmaster charge and a 3-5 arm swing.
With built in terrain mitigation and decent defense.
PGaspy Hard counters some MMM lists.

Also Lamoron- how do you feel about Seethers? I’ve recently put them back into heavy rotation.

        • Seethers are amongst the options I really should like, but I don’t. They power themselves and have some super funny plays with chain attack and high stats, but they’re just horrible because they’re ARM 17 and on the Slayer chassis.

After yet another game where some random POW 12 gun shot his arm off, my Seether retired and only ever comes out when the WSC pulls the occasional Dark Industries. I’m sorry, but I can’t love him… I tried! :(

          • I love mine. I found 3 lists where they do everything Ive ever wanted, and completely take people by surprise with their (at times) frankly ridiculous stats.
            The Casters
            Goreshade1
            WCoG
            Mortenbra

          • Shadowmancer, Occultation, and Spectral Steel to keep it safe I’m guessing. Mortenebra and WCoG both increase it’s threat range as well. I don’t ever seem to catch anyone by surprise though :D

          • Yep. Especially PShade.
Dropping 4 seethers makes it go critical mass.
WCoG and seethers give you a chance to engage and like 3
Morty just likes them on tier because it becomes super efficiency.

          • I’ll try it when the Inflictor arrives, as I’ll get four kits and magnetize them anyway :D

  11. So, we’ve strayed into talking about perfectly reasonable things. Any experiences with your frankly batshit nutty eSkarre list yet?

  12. Have you tried double Wraith Engine under eskarre yet? If not feel free to troll the planet by doing so with the absolutely ridiculous nature of it.
    Trololol

    • Where’s the synergy there? Remember that she can’t feat on them. The WE can already buy extra attacks assuming it’s killing a living unit, so Black Spot isn’t anything it couldn’t do on its own. And all of eSkarre’s movement shenanigans are battlegroup. Maybe I’m missing something? Seems like 18 points of pretty paper weights.

      • Because i typed E not P chris. My bad. Should read pskarre.

        • The Wraith Engine participated when I placed second a few weeks back in a local tournament, which should be good enough for it because man it’s a bad model. I don’t see myself buying them just to field with Skarre1, but I admit it looks fun :D

          • Just as a public service announcement the list is based on a core of:
            Pskarre
            Kraken
            Scarlock
            Wraith engine
            Wraith engine
            Necro Surgeon and stitch thralls

You can fill in the rest anyway you want
My faves are frpm these choices
            Blackbanes
            Soul hunters and darragh
            Necrotects for days.

  13. Random insanity.
    ESkarre and defiler/night wretch spam.

  14. I had my first game against Skarre1 with Duskern playing my old Cavalry/Incorporeal spam list. Dealing with Incorporeal was not a strength of the list, but it turns out that Scraps he needed to kill were pretty good at blowing the now corporeal models up upon death.

I didn’t need a second Arc Node, so that’s more points for things that blow up. Playing without healing was alright in this game, but I can see the attraction.

In the end Duskern timed out, but we finished the game anyway and I took it home on scenario 5-3. It’s a weird list for sure, but it has merit.

    • Considering trying with no Arc Node and the Kraken on Skarre, opening up a lot more points in the list…

    • Alright, the next iteration of the amazing Skarre2 is…

Skarre, Queen of the Broken Coast
      – Deathjack
      – Kraken
Satyxis Blood Witches (Leader & 5 Grunts)
      – Satyxis Blood Hag
      Bloat Thrall
      Bloat Thrall
      Necrotech
      – Scrap Thrall
      Necrotech
      – Scrap Thrall
      Necrotech
      – Scrap Thrall
      Ragman
      Raluk Moorclaw
      – Buccaneer
      Scrap Thralls (3)
      Scrap Thralls (3)
      Scrap Thralls (3)
      Skarlock Thrall

I’ve just painted Raluk Morclaw damnit, and the Kraken needs help landing those melee hits anyway.

    • Not one of my best games, but I shows that event if you play like a complete idiot, that pSkarre list of yours just keeps going even though you don’t ;)

I was a bit disappointed about timing out, but then again you list is so different that I had to think a lot about wtf was going on :) I’m also kinda new with your list and with pSkarre in general. It has a lot of stuff that I haven’t used for a while, so I forgot a thing or two. So I guess timing out under the circumstances isn’t really that bad.

Somehow the two first spins, against N3mo and Hal3y, went a lot better. Everything seemed to work. Beginners luck I guess :)

  15. How do you feel about combining the following under PSkarre
    Aiakos+ double stalker

  16. So I started to my own mothball list but got distracted after picking the caster. Does Scaverous count as mothball for you, he hasnt had much game time and i think tge sepulcher can really change things up for him.

    Scaverous
    Skarlock
    Deathripper
    Sepulcher
    Necrotech
    Soultrappers
    Bane riders
    Bloodwitches plus hag
    Bile thralls

I’m not completely sold on the list, really needs some play testing, might need more bane. I originally wanted Aikos but couldn’t make room.

  17. Scavernous really wants his best friends the steelhead halberdiers.
Its actually fairly easy to fit almost an entire unit inside his melee range…

    • Erhm… what am I missing here?

      • Pretty sure he still thinks he can gather friendly souls, based upon comments up above. A good MK1 strat that went the way of the dodo in MK2.

        • Nope. I wish I could soul steal my own troops. That would be amazing.
They all fit inside his melee range creating a nice bristley wall of SHH that makes scav a lot tougher. Also note how much reach beats things with TK

          • Okay, I’m back with Lamoron on this one. I don’t see how having a bunch of SHH in your melee range does much of anything, other than jam as you described. Your last sentence also needs a little explanation:

“Also note how much reach beats things with TK”

  18. Beats up things…ugh. Stupid phone.
SHH having reach is huge on a tk caster
SHH melee jam is cheaply effective.
In fact they hold multiple advantages on a lit of our fodder models.

  19. Yes you need the second unit lamoron if your going to run the full cav boat and Sgt. Nick.
If not just stick with a single unit as your cheap fodder unit ( oh reach CMA how i love thee)
