Un-Mothballing: Part 2

A few weeks ago I attended a local tournament using a list I made up on the fly while writing about it here. I usually spend days, or even weeks fretting over every little detail or perceived synergy, but simply throwing together a bunch of (rarely used) models was a lot of fun, and I still finished second with the ragged band of misfits.

Then last weekend I attended a two vs. two tournament where I had to throw together another bunch of models without preparation, and again it turned out to be great fun (and we won), so I’ve decided to bring some un-mothballing to the big leagues when I attend Giant Fanatic (the largest danish convention, with major tournaments for eight different games) in a month.

Mothballing: Part 2

I’m thinking I should bring one of the good casters, and it’s been two feat-nerfs since Asphyxious2 left his drawer so I guess he’s it. I don’t much like the established Asphyxious2 build, and there wouldn’t be much un-mothballing about it either, so what else could be good with him, or hasn’t been in one of my lists for a while…

  • Wrong Eye & Snapjaw

Okay so they’re not exactly a rarity but they’re rare enough with Asphyxious2. I’m thinking I want to build a list which has less focus on his feat and more on Caustic Mists, so having a heavy that adds to the denial seems like a logical choice. I also think I want Gorman in there to add something to the cloud wall, though he tends to be a bit out of position for it, and probably Saxon Orrik because of terrain.

Lich Lord Asphyxious

Gorman di Wulfe
Saxon Orrik
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

I accidentally misspelled Wrong Eye when I was typing this, and now I can’t get Mr. Wong out of my head! It like he squirt man-juice on my head! Alright now I totally derailed this thought process, and I have to watch some Mr. Wong.

Mr. Wong!

Aaaaand back to list construction! I’ve really enjoyed having nine Scrap Thralls in my lists these last weeks, so let’s keep them as the crazy wild-card models they are. They’re three points and they can run around the flanks or diddle themselves if they can’t find anything useful to do, but so far they’ve been champs in every game.

I also need some ranged threats, as I like the ability to actually generate some souls for his pie-plate of soul collection, but since the tournament requires fully painted models I might be forced to accept Bile Thralls despite them being in every Asphyxious2 list. Then of course I need at least one Arc Node to apply Excarnate as well.

Lich Lord Asphyxious
– Deathripper
Bile Thralls (Leader & 5 Grunts)
Gorman di Wulfe
Saxon Orrik
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

Perhaps I should acknowledge that he has a feat at this point, and include something I can actually feat on, but the options are so limited when I don’t want banes. I guess I could play without a feat, or maybe inspiration will strike after another couple of list choices.

Next up is what’s sitting on my painting table right this moment, which is Raluk Moorclaw and his trusty Buccaneer. I’ve had those models for a long time without ever unwrapping them, and this is my motivation for finally getting them ready for the table.

Look how happy he is!

It suddenly occurs to me that I don’t really have anything worth hiding behind the Caustic Mists, but what about Bane Riders. Those guys haven’t seen play since WTC 2014 so that counts as being mothballed in my world, and in they go. This leaves me with 13+2 points left, and still no models to feat on.

Lich Lord Asphyxious
– Deathripper
Bane Riders (Leader & 4 Grunts)
Bile Thralls (Leader & 5 Grunts)
Gorman di Wulfe
Raluk Moorclaw
– Buccaneer
Saxon Orrik
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

I guess I should probably include either another Arc Node or a Helldiver, and I do so love me some Helldiver. This takes care of the +2 points and leaves me with 12 points worth of options. I honestly can’t find anything more interesting to include so I guess I’ll throw in some Blood Witches since they’re pretty good with Asphyxious2.

Four points left… and it just occurs to me that the Blood Witches actually have the ability to add to the cloud shenanigans, so now I don’t feel bad about bringing them, although they’re amongst the worst feat models ever since they don’t even get gang when they come back. I think I’d like some Dark Shroud in there as well, and since we’re un-mothballing here I’ll give Ragman some table time as well.

This just leaves two points which should probably be Madelyn Corbeau, since the Blood Hag is always out of range when she’s needed for upkeep removal, and because being able to purge 14″ without using Excarnate can free up some plays.

Lich Lord Asphyxious
– Deathripper
– Helldiver
Bane Riders (Leader & 4 Grunts)
Bile Thralls (Leader & 5 Grunts)
Satyxis Blood Witches (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Satyxis Blood Hag
Gorman di Wulfe
Madelyn Corbeau
Ragman
Raluk Moorclaw
– Buccaneer
Saxon Orrik
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

It looks nothing like a standard Asphyxious2 list so I’m satisfied for now. I think maybe it needs a trial run or two before October though, as I haven’t played Asphyxious2 since 2012. Even if I fail miserably at the event I’ll claim the moral victory and demand a trophy, but until then… TO UN-MOTHBALLED GLORY!

  1. The overseer has become a whole lot more enjoyable again since you decided to avoid the big tournaments. Almost like things were back in your terminus days. Looking back at the stuff you’ve been posting it kinda showed that you were getting burnt out. I wish you luck my friend and hope the list does well.

  2. Well it certainly is different :) I’m looking forward to hearing how it plays. Also, I find it interesting that you are taking the scraps. I’ve never really used them much, so I would love to hear some more about how you usually use them.

    • They’re so cheap you can use them for whatever. I’ve been using them to score and contest, charge in without exploding, killing jamming models, and flanking. You can throw/slam them at stuff, use them as fire beacons, or just run in to threaten free strikes against models that can’t take the blast if your opponent kills it.

      • Is it essential to have at least, lets say 6? Or is a lesser amount also viable? I know this might be hard to answer, but since they have The Overseer stamp of approval, I might start to consider taking them instead of my trusty Machine Wraith :)

        • I don’t think they need a specific number to achieve critical mass, but if you’ve got infantry spam with low ARM values on your own side of th board I probably wouldn’t bring all nine (hard to fit them anywhere).

  3. I’ve been using scrappies for a while, and that’s my experience as well (although usually I just take one group as filler).

It’s hilarious when they occasionally manage to actually blow something up (other than themselves, I mean).

  4. I had my first two test games with the list, and man it’s AWFUL! :D

There are no synergies, no flow, and half the stuff in the list ends up doing nothing useful. The Scraps were bloody spectacular as always, while Moorclaw & Jack tanked hard in one game but were stars in the second (that net is really bloody useful!).

WE&SJ outshone the sun in both games, but that was to be expected against Grimm2. Bane Riders did nothing at all, but then again I couldn’t really protect them without getting assassinated as the first game showed.

Time to give it a think. I could probably get the Bloat Thralls in there some where, and maybe swap the Bane Riders for something that’s useful in the list… or I could change the caster to Scaverous which is really tempting (and I could put in Erebus!) but then I’d have to actually paint him.
