Mini-tournament: 16.08.2015

Having watched some amazing games on twitch from the Iron Moot this weekend (more to come tonight) I’m fired up for next weekends mini-tournament, and I’m damn proud I didn’t get my ass handed to me by Wedding in the Danish Masters this year (damn that boy can play!).

Gotta work on that winners pose a bit though.

I’m sure I’ll be bringing my Deneghra1 list, but as per fucking usual I’m having trouble nailing a second list to go with her. There are quite a few lists I really want to bring, but sadly they all include models that aren’t released yet, so I think I’ll play me some Deneghra2 instead, as it’s been almost a year since I last put her on the table. It’s been years since I messed around with Nightmare as well, so let’s stuff him in there, and of course add the obligatory Arc Nodes.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Nightmare
– Deathripper
– Deathripper

I think I might like to cryx a bit differently with this list, so let’s stuff Wrong Eye & Snapjaw in there as well, and of course the Skarlock and a WWS so we can Ghost Walk and run the Arc Node without having to activate Deneghra (business as usual).

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Nightmare
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw
Skarlock
Warwitch Siren

That’s a fairly solid core against a lot of different opponents, but it’s also 31 points which means we have just 25 points left. Since we’re already putting in models I haven’t used in years I think my Slaughterborn conversion deserves to actually see play (he’s been hanging out in my drawer for a looong time now) so he’ll go in there as well.

Thatta way boys!

Gorman is available so why not, and he’ll make it a bit easier keeping Deneghra undead as well. That leaves me with 20 points left, and just 10 models on the field. I should probably put in some Bane Thralls but instead I’ve asked Duskern if I can borrow the Wraith Engine I gifted him when the old Overseer sight hit 100.000 page views, because just last week it hit 1.000.000 page views, and I think that specific Wraith Engine deserves to see some tournament play.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Nightmare
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
Gerlack Slaughterborn
Gorman di Wulfe
Skarlock
Wraith Engine
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw
Warwitch Siren

This is so far out of my comfort zone I can’t even see it in the distance, so perhaps I should add a bit of infantry…. or I could add Butterball and Jelly belly, who haven’t seen table-time since somewhere around 2012!

Jelly Belly & Butterball

Seven points left then, but I still really need some boots on the ground, and some upkeep removal wouldn’t be horrible either. I guess I could remove an Arc Node and put in a full unit of Blood Witches and nine Scrap Thralls… yeah let’s do that

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Nightmare
– Deathripper
Satyxis Blood Witches (Leader & 9 Grunts)
– Satyxis Blood Hag
Bloat Thrall
Bloat Thrall
Gerlack Slaughterborn
Gorman di Wulfe
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Scrap Thralls (3)
Skarlock
Wraith Engine
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw
Warwitch Siren

This will work, and it will be glorious… no worries! I almost feel like I should leave my Deneghra1 list at home now, and just play this one. Why not handicap myself even more by having just one list available. I’m off to put together all those Scrap Thralls, and thank god there’s no painting requirement!

  1. I… what… You have the best list-building methods. Isn’t it great that we have the Deneghras that let us just put anything on the table and it’ll work? I’m anxiously awaiting the battle reports because I was laughing just reading through this article.

    • I just had my first game and it was quite the success. I played against Grimm2 and took him down hard.

The Burrowers were blown to hell by Scraps, The Wraith engine ate half a unit of Croak Raiders (but otherwise failed spectacularly) and Snapjaw munched a hole through the lines so I could apply Nightmare to face.

The Bloats both survived and actually killed a few models, but Slaughterborn and Gorman were sniped by Grimm before they managed anything.

Great success and ready for the weekend!

  2. Short report from the tournament.

    1. Weirdos Vs. Cygnar (Haley2)
    – Game hangs in the balance when Gorman accidentally drifts Black Oil on Haley2, and Snapjaw then knocks her down and eats her. Wraith Engine did nothing. Bloats enabled the assassination with their one combined kill.

    2. Weirdos Vs. Menoth (Severius2)
    – I made a mistake with the Wraith Engine, and then it rolled poorly instead of average which would have saved me, and then I lost the attrition war. There were so very few models left on the table, but he had better scenario presence.

    3. Weirdos Vs. Circle (Krueger2)
    – Complete grind with a mexican stand-off between his heavies and mine. I lured the Stalker out with my Wraith Engine, which was the most useful thing that turd did all day, and got ahead in attrition. He pulled himself back in the game, and ahead, but he had to load up Ghetorix to full to kill Nightmare, and Snapjaw went NOM NOM NOM on Krueger2 (no transfers and crit KD on the charge).

2nd place finish for the weirdos! I think the list might actually be worth exploring if the Wraith Engine goes and buggers itself with a rusty spoon somewhere else, and Slaughterborn can keep it company out in the miserable cold.

    • I’m impressed Butter Ball and Jellybelly have been effective enough to keep their place in the list. And with the WE and Slaughterborn warming the bench that’s a whole lot of wiggle room. Of note, it creates a DJ sized hole in the list…

      • In the first game the Bloats did very little, but one of them killed a Forge Guard and opened up an important lane. In the second game one bloat killed four Errants and might have won me the game with a little bit better dice early on, while the second one wiped out half a unit of Cleansers.

In the last game they were rock stars. They killed most of his Druids, a bunch of Bloodweavers, a Blackclad, and when Ghetorix killed them… one turned out to be in detonation range, and I rolled 11 on my dice with the POW 14 hit on him! kaBOOM!

  3. That looks way too much like my Mortenebra lists to make me comfortable with my life

    • … well… hmm… maybe you… I think… nope, I’ve got nothing, but you should definitely reconsider something :D

      • Oh Lamoron, you poet you.

That being said, I second the sentiment. Mort list, Nightmare+Node only jacks, wut?

        • Oh, and you’re seriously making me consider buying Bloats. I’ve wanted them for a while because 5″ AoEs are hilarious, but I’ve managed to hold off. You’ve cost me way too much money over the years. At least Croe’s were really really fun to assemble!

          • I have a fully painted unit of Croes, but I haven’t really found a list to use them in yet.

          • @Duskern – I’ve run them with pDenny several times and they really are a lot of fun on the table. You need someone like Deneghra to help them hit, but they can dish out some really notable damage, namely heavy infantry and beasts. Stealth and Bushwhack are a great combination. Put Dougal nearby to help with the ranges and they can be surprisingly annoying against an opponent that isn’t prepared to deal with them. True, we don’t have issues with heavy infantry or most beasts, but they do it at range and then run away, which is something we usually don’t have access to.

          • I still remember that one time my Legion opponent turned the back of an Angelius to the three remaining Cutthroats… his face… priceless :D
