Danish Masters 2015

Friday evening just after work I had the missus drive me to the harbor. I had a spot in Peters car from there, and we began the long and arduous journey to the other side of the country. It’s not really long, nor really arduous, but it pisses me off that the swedes have a third of our travel time to the Danish Masters, so by god I will label the journey arduous.

After a solid nights sleep in Peters aunts basement (living like kings!) we arrived at the venue, and the grand quest to beat Mikkel Ernst and Christoffer Wedding began (screw the titles, I came for their heads, and of course for Svenne!). We met the swedes, took the obligatory Norbert pictures (he’s so adorable) and got down to business!

The first game was against a Mohamed who plays Cygnar. He asked some questions about my lists, and when he heard about the soul gathering things, and RFP options I had in my Asphyxious3 list he decided to drop Stryker3 instead of Constance.

I was almost certain he would, so I dropped Deneghra1 into him which was a unwinnable match-up for him. The rest of the tournament didn’t end well for Mohamed either (0-5) which killed my Strength of Schedule (I bloody hate that tie-breaker).

I moved on to the second round, in which I faced a player I didn’t know. I love facing new players because you never really know what you’re up against, and Michael had brought Runes of War + Madrak2. I had a lot of living models in both lists, and Asphyxious3 is lovely against Runes (so many spell casters on the other side), but I wasn’t sure I liked my chances in a Madrak2 Vs. Asphyxious3 game.

In the end I decided on dropping Deneghra1 . I was fully planning to stay the fuck away from Madrak until all my Nyss Hunters had been turned into Mechanithralls, but the game quickly turned my way.

He runs, I run and Crippling Grasp his Fennblades.

With the Fennblades locked down by Crippling Grasp it was just a matter of time before the Nyss took care of them. To make matters worse for Michael the combination of crippled Fenns and the house on the flank made sure his champions were utterly stuck down behind them, so my one spell effectively took out a third of his list.

Michael goes in aggressively on my left flank since his own is getting absolutely demolished. The champions shift to the middle and end up going head to head with the Mechanithralls, which have been fueled by the dying Boomhowlers on the flank.

Cleanup on aisle three

The Fenns are wiped out by the Nyss, the champions drop hard to Mechanithralls when Deneghra lands a Parasite on them, and Madrak is gunned down by a combination of Nyss Hunters and Zira. His Pygs failed to contain me, his forces were shut down and trapped, so he was one half unit of Kriels away from being tabled entirely.

Game 3

Serious business time. I get to play Kasper from my local Meta, who’s doing way better than he thought he would. He’s not entirely optimistic about his chances against me, but he’s a better player than he thinks he is, and I’m not sure I have the right answer to his lists.


I know it’s time to drop Asphyxious3 since I’m up against Legion, and between Vayl1 and Lylyth2 I’m fairly certain it’ll be Lylyth2. Deneghra1 can’t handle the feat turn as even a single Ravagore in range will kill her, so Asphyxious3 it is.

He wins the roll and goes first, which is pretty sad news for me. He runs up, and I make the first mistake of the day. I only briefly consider that he might go for the non-pincushion assassination attempt against Asphyxious3, when I’m on a hill with 3 focus camped (17/20) but he does.

It fails and Kasper ends up in a situation he thinks is an automatic loss. He’s overextended, and he thinks I’m in range to simply nuke everything he has, but as an afterthought he has the Naga nuke my Sea Witch, turning the Satyxis Raiders from heavy killing gods into toothless kitties.

Then I go ahead and do something stupid as well. Instead of playing like I should have, and simply killed his angels while camping and going in, backed up by a Beyond Death Darragh I get tunnel vision and go take a poke at him. Instead of Beyond Death I Death Ride my Soulhunters, instead of ensuring that I was out of charge range of the Angelius I move into it to get Lylyth2 in Carnage range, and though I feat I leave myself very vulnerable.

I jam him as hard as I can, knowing full well that the Forsaken is going to blight bomb a LOT of my army anyway.  The one Ravagore has hot dice and cleans out my three Soulhunters in melee, and the second Ravagore lands some pain on Asphyxious3. I roll well on the healing and it’s attack is actually helpful.

The blight bomb kills nine models and leaves the Angelius free to charge. It charges Asphyxious and I heal three. Here we need a judge called over to see if my remaining Scything Touch enhanced Soulhunter gets a free strike, which it doesn’t, but we rolled the dice after the game and he would have lost his body aspect, which would most likely have negated the kill.

It boost to hit (9+) and I heal one. It then needs a 12 on three dice to kill me, and he rolls a thirteen to seal the deal. The first assassination attempt was something like 25-30% and the second was about 25%, but it was my own damn fault. I got tunnel vision and decided on getting some revenge, instead of playing the longer but safer game


This was an experience. I quickly decided that I would enjoy the experience, and have fun at the expense of the people who couldn’t. The organizers had bought more meat and potatoes that twice the number of players could possibly have consumed, but then marinated it in something that couldn’t handle the heat on the grill.

Honest mistake of course, but the meat was charbroiled on the outside and bloody on the inside. This in itself was nothing to laugh at, but watching people trying to cut that meat with plastic utensils was nothing short of hilarious.

People would desperately saw at the unyielding meat for minutes, and then when they got the least bit impatient and applied some pressure they would snap. You could hear it going on on all the tables, with the rage and frustration increasing by the minute.

In the end people were attacking the meat with their bare hands, or attempting to double or triple the number of utensils used at the same time. Some were moderately successful but most weren’t, and the sounds of snapping utensils and people going OH FFS MAN still makes me giggle. The organizers came back strong though, and served the rest of the meat at lunch the following day, cooked to perfection and with real utensils.

Game 4

Sadly I got matched up against Peter, who’s one of my regular opponents and the guy I was sharing a basement with. Since neither of us was going to end up winning we spent the evening at his aunts house drinking tea and debating the coming match. We were more or less in agreement that it would end up being Deneghra1 Vs. Grimm2, and it did.

His list is way more scary than the one I just faced, though on the surface they might seem similar. Interestingly enough he just steamrolled another Cryx player who had much the same Deneghra1 list I had, though he had Satyxis Raiders instead of the Mechanithrall recursion.

I won the roll to go first, and it all got a bit hectic so I didn’t grab as many pictures as I should. My left flank came down to a gunfight between the Highwaymen and the Nyss Hunters, which ended in mutual destruction with just three Nyss Hunters and a fleeing Highwayman surviving the ordeal.

Trollbloods turn 2 – Feat turn

I survived his feat turn with more surviving army than I thought, mostly due to some minor errors on his part. I was allowed first strike on his Highwaymen with my Nyss + Dougal, so his feat turn was less impressive than it would have been with a full unit of Highwaymen instead. I also applied the now time tested tradition of putting Crippling Grasp on Fennblades, though this time I would have to go in a beat them up with Mechanithralls instead of just shooting them.

Swinging my way

The left flank was wiped out for both of us, but Dougal stood fast with one foot on the hill and the other in the zone. He gunned down model after model, taking out three Pyg burrowers in a single round, and his bravery inspired the last couple of Nyss Hunters to hold the zone (and even score a point).

The Mechanithralls charged into the approaching Fennblades and absolutely flopped all their rolls. The Fennblades then whiffed everything they had, but since I was controlling the zone it was fine by me if they all just wanted to cuddle.

He put up heroes tragedy and the Mechanithralls killed half his Fennblades when the feat came up, then his Fennblades killed half my Mechanithralls now that they were automatically hit, but still couldn’t move because they were crippled + feated on, and half of them were knocked down as well.

Out on the right flank an epic battle ensued between Aiakos and his Totem Hunter, but Aiakos prevailed during the feat round and my poor Deathripper finally emerged from behind the rocks and actually participated in the battle.

I get a bit sweaty when the bomber climbs on the hill and Grimm removes Deneghras stealth, but with The Withering up he has trouble landing those barrels on Deneghra, and with ARM 19 at the time she comes through almost unscathed.

Finally I just have to clear the zone of a Slag Troll, and I can win on scenario because the only two models in the other zone is a broken Highwayman and Grimm himself doing battle with the Nyss and failing. The Devils Shadow Mutineers and the Withershadow Combine nuke it to oblivion, and it’s a win.

Game 5

I’m matched up against Christoffer Wedding, the Dane-killer, the nemesis, the Swede no Dane has ever beaten. He’s playing Retribution instead of his regular circle, and we end up in a Deneghra1 Vs. Kaelyssa (Force wall) game, which we both knew was coming. I can’t get the math to fit on his list so there’s probably something missing, but it looked something like this.

We’re not only playing for my honor, but also for the horrible doll named Svenne, which I told Wedding he could not get rid of until a Dane managed to beat him. The doll is the wandering trophy nobody really wants, but here he is in all his glory.

Svenne is watching the action from the sidelines… not sure you can see it on the image, but he has a very intimate piercing.

I win the roll to go first (dear god yes) and waddle my 6-7 inches up. It’s a messed up theme force, and being completely unable to even contest the middle without doing nothing but running on the second turn is incredibly tough to come back from.

So I ran in what I could without getting completely wiped out.

Wedding clears the (my) left flag. and the middle flag, which means that he’s up two points and all I’ve done is send in three Nyss Hunters on the light jack to the right. This is going to be problematic. I can feel that Wedding isn’t as practiced with Retribution yet, which means that he actually makes mistakes, but I’m not complaining.

Slogging through the muck

The first round I walked. The second round I ran, and the third round I have to deal with Kaelyssas feat. Everything has stealth and cannot be charged… did I mention how much I loathe that theme force. Now the upside is, that I can feat on most of his heavies and I can spawn six Mechanithralls within walking range of his middle models.

Deneghra feats, and the Nyss clear out the right flag. I run the Deathripper up there to score, since casting spells on Kaelyssas battlegroup sucks balls anyway. The Mechanithralls do well enough in the middle, crushing two lights, but there’s still a heavy contesting the flag.

On the left I try and jam enough models within four inches of the flag, on the turn where the Phoenix can’t simply combust them all at once. Struck by inspiration I have Boomhowler Rage Howl, catching four jacks and breaking the Battlemages (go Boomies!).

Slowly tipping my way, but losing on scenario is a very real threat

At this point I have two points and Wedding has three. I’m in control of the right flag which he can’t contest, the middle flag is deadlocked between my troops that can’t kill his Manticore because it has a Covering Fire on it’s head, and the Manticore which can’t hurt me without losing that protection. I tried to slam it away but missed.

8s on 3d6 is to much to ask

The left flag is hotly contested, but I can’t chew my way through the remaining two heavies on the hill. Zira does her best but even she has to bow to the god of dice, and this just isn’t her game (hitting is no problem, but the damage dice kept coming up low). Wedding is getting a wee bit nervous as I’m scoring twice now, which means that if he fails to clear the flag even once I’ll win. Instead of clearing it he goes for an assassination I hadn’t seen coming.

The center Manticore is freed up, walks up and throws a Mechanithrall at Deneghra. I had forgotten that cover doesn’t apply to throws because they’re melee attacks, so Deneghra lands on her ass and takes some damage. Kaelyssa walks up and is out of range to Arcane Bolt her.

Kaelyssa shoots and takes Deneghra down to 8 boxes, but since he was out of range with the Arcane Bolt I survive. If he had moved his Phoenix first I would have died (we checked), but that one mistake cost him the game, as the Nyss Hunters put three aimed three-man combines into Kaelyssa and end her.

This was an amazing game, with both of us fighting through so much bullshit. I had to deal with his feat, his covering fires, and the theme force, while his Phoenix was MAT2 due to Rage Howl and The Withering, couldn’t move, and couldn’t Combust, while his mages were broken on the flank.

The end

Due to strength of schedule I came in 4th, which I guess was predetermined. I thought this was my year as I came 5th in 2011, played circle in 2012, came 3rd in 2013, came 2nd in 2014, but lord Toruk had other plans and I was missing that 4th place. Now next year it will all be MINE!

Thanks to everyone who was there for a great tournament, and I hope I see more foreign faces next year. There’s been talk about expanding the tournament, and I would love it if little Denmark could host some really big tournaments in the future.

  2. Nice read and congratulations on forth place. I’m guessing we’ll have to do that rematch some other time. For me, the best part of the entire weekend was the face you made when you realized I went 4-1. ;)

      • Thanks. It’s crazy how much can happen in such a short period of time. But I need to say that I did not deserve that last victory, and if I had lost, there’d be a Swede in both 2nd and 3rd place. :P

  4. Question about the Boomies: How important are they? I’ve been putting off buying them for a long time but now that I’m coming back around to pDenny (thanks to 3Denny excitement) I keep looking at them. Do they ever get much work done or is their primary purpose to stand in the way and not die half the time? Maybe it’s just because we’re Cryx players but I’ve never been intimidated by seeing boomies on the other side of the table.

    • Boomhowler himself has Rage Howler which is a game ending ability in some match-ups, but Boomies without help are merely speed-bumps. Boomies with help on the other hand…

      Ranged threat turns up to sixteen inches with Dougal, RAT can increase from four to eight without even aiming (Crippling+Withering), and power increases from twelve to sixteen.

      Like all models they turn up to 11 when they get to charge with the help of debuffs, but Boomhowler can stand then up for free, enabling them all to get in there.

      I like them. They give the list some durability, they screen the Necrosurgeon team behind them rather well, so the Mechanithralls get to pick up a lot of their corpses, and they’re an acceptable ranged unit when you help them out. There are many better melee units, but none that carry POW 12 guns as well.

      • Second question: You asked this yourself on the PP forums, but how important are you finding the Skarlock Commander? I’ve made a few lists that included him but they could really use the extra point (like pDenny pirates trying to fit in DSM too). Having never fielded McThralls before (Just recently got the requisite 20 to start using them) I don’t have the playtime experience.

        • I have learned to love the Skarlock Commander. I almost never get him into melee or have him cast spells, but his mere presence is super valuable.

          Mechanithralls can spread out more. Necrosurgeons can place new Mechanithralls with ease, and the Commander can often stay in cover/concealment, which allows for a survivable unit anchor.

          The increased CMD also allows you to keep one Mechanithrall way back, which is hard with a CMD unit leader that also needs to be right at the front.

          I’ve never really gotten to use any of his abilities except CMD, though I did hit something with his stick once.
