The Hellbringer: 2

Today I attended a small 16 player tournament in Silkeborg. The tournament was held in Silkeborgs exceptionally beautiful venue called Lunden (the meadow), where the temperature is cool, the air is amazing, and even the noise isn’t an issue!

Actual picture from the area outside Lunden

Unlike our normal tournaments this one was a round-robin group tournament, in which the four group winners would advance to the semi-finals. I had a little laugh when the groups where announced, as poor “casual” Rasmus was matched up against 1st, 2nd, and 4th place in the last Danish Masters, but he took it in stride.

Game 1: Asphyxious3 Vs. Nemo3

I only brought one list since I wanted to use the opportunity to see what Asphyxious3 could do under pressure. The game itself is somewhat uninteresting as I grossly underestimated the damage output of a Stormwall, a Stormstrider, and Dynamo against Asphyxious on feat round (melted right through a decent camp and my feat).

  • Asphyxious3 is not Terminus
  • Asphyxious3 really needs Deathjack

The inability to get basic upkeep spells up and running without lowering the camp was sorely missed, and not having any defense against shooting except stats was really annoying. In any case I moved on to the second game.

Game 2: Asphyxious3 Vs. Zerkova

Now I’ve never actually won against Mikkel, and he’s never actually lost with Zerkova, so I didn’t fancy my chances in this game (I’ve lost the last three tournament finals to him). I did feel that my list had some game against his, and perhaps Asphyxious would achieve that elusive win!

Asphyxious the Hellbringer
– Cankerworm
– Vociferon
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Satyxis Raiders (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Satyxis Raider Sea Witch
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Machine Wraith
Madelyn Corbeau
Satyxis Raider Captain
Saxon Orrik
Objective: Arcane Wonder

Koldun Kommander Aleksandra Zerkova
– Behemoth
Great Bears of Gallowswood
Greylord Outriders (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Winter Guard Rifle Corps (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
Kell Bailoch2
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker
Objective: Arcane Wonder

Mikkel wins the first turn and runs as far up as he can without getting mauled by the Satyxis Raiders (I forgot how much I love that). I on the other hand, have to advance into his guns, and I have to survive with enough muscle left to handle not doing much on his feat turn either.

This is gonna suck isn’t it…

Instead of running head first into the guns, I decide to try something else. He has no way of negating my stealth, and if I make his riflemen move instead of aiming, the veiled Satyxis Raiders might actually be alive to do something later on, so I shuffle a bit.

It got way intense and I forgot to take pictures, but my plan sort of works. He has to move up and feat to avoid me grabbing both zones, which allows me to jam in with surviving Raiders even though they’re walking in there to jam. The two Raiders who actually manage to hit something completely spike and clear my own zone, so I can dominate for a point.

This might work!

The Great Bears annihilate my Cankerworm, who thought it was a bright idea to bite the Objective, but discovered that he was about half an inch outside of control, so instead of scuttling away he got himself very badly axed.

I struggle to clear the zones but those Great Bears simply won’t die. I move up Asphyxious a little bit and feat, since his Outriders and Behemoth can power the feat and hopefully give me some punch, but then I notice that Mikkel is way down on time, so I decide to play the clock a bit.

Mikkel struggles to annihilate me with less than five minutes left, and makes some poor decisions. I get another point from my zone, and can now theoretically clear his zone and dominate for the win (I’d give me a 60/40 shot of clearing it), but Mikkel times out…

I might not know jack shit about Asphyxious3 at this point in time, but he earned himself a special place in my heart today. I did learn a lot of things about him in this game though!

  • Arcane Wonder ROCKS!
  • I have a lot of support in my list I might not need
  • Carnage is an amazing spell
  • Blood Boon is harder to use than expected
  • I wasn’t getting enough value out of Cankerworm

Then I moved on the third and final game of the group, against Rasmus who had not been having a good day on the tables.

Game 3: Asphyxious3 Vs. Jarl Skuld

Rasmus dropped Jarl Skuld which I felt was a mistake, but then again his other list had a Mountain King so I guess he didn’t have a better option. I lose the third roll of the day and go second again…

Jarl Skuld, Devil Of Thornwood
– Pyre Troll
– Troll Impaler
– Dire Troll Mauler
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes
Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder
Trollkin Warders (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Trollkin Warders (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Fell Caller Hero
Horthol, Long Rider Hero

The game itself wasn’t super interesting either, as a meat mountain against a list full of weapon masters isn’t going to be pretty. The game did end in some hilarious action that deserves to be mentioned though.

Not looking up for the Trollbloods

In a last ditch effort to keep me from winning on scenario Rasmus moves his remaining Warder into the left zone. I have 15 Focus due to three beasts going all out and failing spectacularly, and I’m within 13″ of Jarl who’s rocking three transfers.

I hear that Søren lost his third game, so our group should come down to control points. Instead of killing Jarl I move to dominate the zone, and all I have to do is kill a Warder (you can guess where this is going).

  • Cankerworm AP bites him (tough)
  • Cankerworm tail (fail)
  • Cankerworm tail (fail)
  • Tartarus charges (tough)
  • Darragh Wrathe charges (tough)
  • Madelyn seduces the Fell Caller who hits him (tough)
  • Two Satyxis Raiders charge him (tough / fail)
  • Two Bane Thralls charge him (tough / tough)

I was taking the hint before the Bane Thralls charged so I also charged his beasts. The Pyre Troll goes down, and the one Bane Thrall (with Scything Touch) I got in on Jarl lands a hit, and spikes like crazy, one-shotting Jarl since both his remaining beasts where full on Fury.

So it came down to control points where Søren and I were equal, and since he won our game he moved on to the semi-finals. I didn’t much mind though, as the fourth and possibly fifth game of the day didn’t appeal much to me anyway (and I get to chuckle about accidentally killing Jarl while writing this).

  • I definitively need the Deathjack to put Ashen Veil back on after the Raiders charge.
  • I definitively have to much support in the list.

It was nice getting the dice rolling again, and Asphyxious3 is showing some solid potential already, so I’m going to stick with him for a while and see where he takes me!

  1. A nice read. It’s lovely to see some posts here again. It’s been boring as hell on work now for a while :)
