Asphyxious 3: Hellbringer

This last week I actually had some games of Warmachine, and the coming weekend I get to attend a small tournament in Silkeborg. It’s been months since I felt like playing, but the release of SR 2015, more specifically the Vanguard option, made me pick up the dice.

I never really got around to playing much Asphyxious3 back when he was released, so this seems like the perfect time to give him a much deserved go. I picked a fairly standard Asphyxious3 list, and took it out against the Iron Mother last night.

Asphyxious the Hellbringer
– Deathjack
– Vociferon
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Satyxis Raiders (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Satyxis Raider Sea Witch
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Madelyn Corbeau
Orin Midwinter
Satyxis Raider Captain
Saxon Orrik
Objective: Effigy of Valor

Even though Ashen Veil didn’t do much against the Iron Mothers forces, the combination seems solid. I know a lot of people argue that Raiders don’t need Ashen Veil, but I like being untouchable, and against things that will hit them anyway I can just assign Ashen Veil to Asphyxious from the beginning instead.

Nice to be back in the muck

The game was interesting enough, but the dice were in my favor and turned a minor advantage into a slaughter. The combination of lightning fast pushers, whom can actually both hit and damage with Carnage/Scything Touch is pretty darn good, and it’s been a while since I’ve used Satyxis Raiders (so long that I can’t actually find half my unit, in case you were wondering about the Blood Witches on the table).

This weekend will be 42 point games though, so I decided to cut out the Deathjack and Orin. With them out of the picture I don’t need the Effigy of Valor any more, so that gets turned into Arcane Wonder, because Asphyxious3 might be the perfect caster for that Objective.

Asphyxious the Hellbringer
– Cankerworm
– Vociferon
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Satyxis Raiders (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Satyxis Raider Sea Witch
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Machine Wraith
Madelyn Corbeau
Satyxis Raider Captain
Saxon Orrik
Objective: Arcane Wonder

I’m just going to bring this list, since I plan on using the tournament to figure out his strengths and weaknesses, and winning is secondary to drinking coffee and having a good time anyway (this particular organizer is also known for his super awesome venue and very relaxed tournaments).

See you next week for the tournament report!

  1. To be fair, the dice didn’t treat you to well either, the ‘one below defence’ seemed to be the way of that particular game. Difference was that I missed all my quality attacks as well :)

  2. Hard not to like those MAT10 Bane Thralls. Or MAT11 Tartarus. Or MAT11 on the clutch charge Darragh Wrathe.

I’ve had 4 games with him now having also picked him up recently. Turns out he works pretty well with 30 Bane Knights too (sadly also quite boring).

    Lich3
    – Vociferon
    – Cankerworm
    30 Bane Knights trololol
    Max Blackbanes Ghost Raiders
    Darragh Wrathe
    Tartarus
    Ragman

I feel like dropping him against most Hordes matchups is amazing. I’ve had the good fortune to play eVayl theme tier 4, Calandra theme (9 light warbeasts), and Lylyth2 and there’s few times I would use the words “good fortune” otherwise (especially with regards to the Legion matchup). All three games were hilarious. eVayl managed to push me up to 34 Focus after my opponent went all in trying to remove all of the Bane Knights – he managed to get 23 (not quite deleting most units) with her Feat and all the guns. It wasn’t enough.

Arcane Wonder is amazing for him.

If I get first turn he frequently just camps and runs 12″. Puts Ashen Veil up on himself next turn and camps. Probably Feats. Beyond Death. Opponent kills Bane Knights. Lich destroys the world.

Given your use of characters, who would you pair him with in a Masters event?

    • I don’t know who I’ll pair him with yet, because I still don’t really know what he does (except camp like a boss of course), but most likely the Witch Coven because of Vanguard and character restrictions.

If you have the first turn you can cast mobility and fail-charge 11″, while getting your spells up on the same turn, which costs you an inch of movement but gives you a better camp on the second round.

      • I’m not going to even attempt lecturing you about what to include with him and I also wouldn’t want to risk interrupting the process of trial and error for list selection.

I will however point out the biggest problem I’ve had with 3gaspy that I couldn’t change was character restrictions. Just like termi he is a character hog. So the witch coven are a good choice for list pairings but they are so damn hard to keep alive I ended up with eDenny.

      • Mobility + charge is defintiely a solid option but in those games against eVayl and Lylyth I thought perhaps it best to not camp 3 on the frontlines (especially when Vayl can Purification off Ashen Veil). Terrain placement was also relevant. Boosted POW15s at dice -5 will still make a significant dent in the old Lich.

I’ve paired him with my version of your eDenny Naval Company list:

        Deneghra2
        – Nightwretch
        – Leviathan
        – Deathjack
        Aiakos
        – Leviathan
        Orin Midwinter
        Gorman di Wulfe
        Dougal McNaille
        Warwitch Siren
        Max Bane Riders

Which to fair has been crushing dreams for everyone from Goreshade3 to Haley1 to Saeryn to Hunters Grim.

        She’s so freaking amazing!

  3. I probably got a whole 10 games in last year. Nearly all of them with Gaspy3. Your articles kept me going through all those times I didn’t get the opportunity for a game. Praise lord Toruk that your have returned.

Also it’s great that your testing out Gaspy3, I’ve been waiting a long time for a Lamoron view on things.

  4. I was wondering where you’d gotten to; it’s good to have you back my friend :)

Early game, you’re actually better off assigning 2 focus to DJ, having HIM put up AV and ST, then running Gaspy3.

You get to keep the 12″ move AND 2 extra focus from not needing Mobility while still getting your upkeeps in play.

I find overall MidnightCarnival’s 3Gaspy list very very hard to improve upon.

Like most 3Gaspy lists its pretty character intensive (Although oddly enough, only DJ is jarring with my Denny’s 18 right now) but it’s really got all the answers in there.

My one regret is being unable to fit an Inflictor in there. Cankerworm is an easy drop, but I’ll be damned if I can find the other 3 points. But the Shield Guard is just too valuable for a caster that camps for a living and lacks Sac Pawn like Terminus. The fact that the Inflictor is a focus efficient SPD 6 heavy with Reach is nice to keep in the back pocket for a caster with mobility. (And even if you don’t need him to keep Eiryss off your caster, Shield Guard is still very valuable for all the juicy solos he likes to run).

For ADR though it works out nicely – Standard list, and Raiders + Inflictor go into specialists for an even 20 points. Yay for that I suppose.

    • Didn’t for a second consider that Deathjack could cast both spells… good one Laz. The only thing I could see dropping is the WSC because Asphyxious3 does have Hexblast and one ‘Arc Node’ at his disposal, though of course upkeeping then hurts ones camp.

      • It’s a possibility. Resource cost is ugly though – 1 less camp, 3 for Hex Blast and potentially another 1 as you can’t puppet strings it. Not sure it’s worth actually having the shield guard to ward away Eiryss if I’m camping a lot less now :(

Puppet strings is also seriously awesome for your charge initial to trigger Blood Boon, as you’d rather not boost if you can avoid it but rerolls safeguard it nicely.

The option I might consider though is subbing a unit for Blood Witches, as that’s 3 points saved exactly. Hag is awesome vs. Hordes as is for Tough removal (Trolls, Skorne, Witch Doc Croc) and preventing healing on beasts, plus Hordes tend to be ever so slightly lower on magic weapons. Solid targets for his spell lists, and still self sufficient if they have to go without.

But I haven’t tested that yet so yeah it’s all a bit WIP. Suppose that’s fine as the Inflictor isn’t out yet (still…!)

  5. Good to have you back!

    Asphyxious3
    -Vociferon
    -Deathjack
    -Cankerworm
    Raiders + UA
    Bane Riders
    Bane Knights

This is the core of my list. The slowest unit has Vengeance to speed them up. Every piece is a good target for Scything or Ashen. It puts a ton of pressure on opponents though sometimes you risk over-extending yourself.

The remaining 6 points can be a siren to follow Cankerworm around. Gorman to let you place AV somewhere other than Asphyxious for the early game. Darragh Wrathe for more speed and Beyond Death. Raider Captain for her buff and the solo hunting she can do.

I’ve had great success with it.
