Pirate Queen Skarre: 2

I finally got in a game with the pSkarre double Kraken list. I’ve been assessing the list and considering some changes, but I decided on trying the list out at least once before going on a tweaking expedition (see, I can grow as a player as well!). I also got around to painting her model, which I feel went rather well.

The list operates on the idea, that very few lists can shoot two Krakens to death before they get in charge range, and that few heavies out-threat them. pSkarre also has the ability to power them both to full while casting Dark Guidance if she rolls 4+ on her Ritual Sacrifice, but realistically she can power one, have the other one shoot, while popping Dark Guidance.

I faced an Asphyxious3 list for the first time, with a bunch of infantry (Raiders + Bane Knights + Blood Witches) and the Deathjack. I think he might have outnumbered me 3-1, which is way out of my comfort zone but then again that’s what the list is all about. I won’t do a full battle report since I only took two pictures, but the game was fun!

An entire 50 points list…

The game went down like this. I ran up, he ran up and put a toe in the zone with the Deathjack. I messed up and put my first Kraken in charge range, which combined with a single Bane Knight brought it down. pSkarre feated, and the Soul Hunters wrecked half his list with charges, while pSkarre and the second Kraken ate the Deathjack.

Asphyxious moves up, and even with my slaughter and feat turn up it’s not looking so hot because he clears out the zone, and he’s now a single turn from winning on scenario. The Kraken is Death Chilled so I could move it into the zone and hope it survives, because pSkarre can’t reach Asphyxious3 because of the wreck marker… wait… wreck marker…

Lord Necrotech Khymera & A.C.H.M.E.D

Khymera walks up and turns the Deathjack wreck into Scrap Thralls (five of them), Darragh Wrathe then clears out a Blood Witch with Hellfire just to make sure there’s room to park pSkarre near Asphyxious3, and she goes in for the kill. Now this was his feat turn, but since he felt safe he had burned all his Focus, so with his Darragh Wrathe nearby I was at dice -6, with him healing 1d3 every time I bought an attack.

I go in with the horns, knock him down, and then it’s all about rolling them dice. I do an average of 2.5 damage per attack after healing (with Life Trader), and I rolled a five on Ritual Sacrifice, which means that after boosting the knock-down attack I still have 10 Focus. I still have four Focus left when he goes down, and celebrations were had by all (well just me really).

I only won this because of an opponent mistake, but the list actually felt pretty solid. I made a massive amount of mistakes, but it being the first time with the list and my second ever game with pSkarre that was to be expected. I don’t know about the future of this build, but it feels like it’s more than just a gimmick so far.

    Your podcast renewed my interest in coming back to the game after a long break. Thanks for that.

    I think pskarre double kraken is one of those dark horse lists that no one can plan for and as such make tons of bone head mistakes.

    Although its so very hard not to run blood gorgers with pskarre. I’ve had two wreck full health jacks on feat turn. Not to mention how ridiculous gerlak becomes.

    I love when you go second string casters. Cryx has an embarrassment of riches in the second tier.

    Btw. Venethrax + SR2013. It takes effort to lose.

    • Venethrax is a power house indeed :D

      I did consider Bloodgorgers, but the list really needs the speed and Incorporeal that only Soul Hunters bring, as well as the ability to get out of the way and allow the Krakens to do their thing.

  2. Interesting. I find soulhunters to be atgm / tempest blazer bait. Maybe its my meta.

    I’d love to see double kraken skarre with the sea dogs. P+S what?

    P.S: I would love to see your two caster choices for SR2013. Mine is venethrax and edeneghra.

    • Sadly the feat requires them to be faction models in order to benefit, so it would need to be the Tier list which doesn’t allow Mr. Walls or Bosun Grogspar.

      Soul Hunters are indeed bait, but in this particular setup they’re a defensive unit, which means I can keep them down behind the Krakens while abusing cover where possible (that’s the theory anyway).

    @ Ryan – Venethrax is amazingly good at domination/denial in scenario. You can camp him routinely to 25+ arm. And smoke off half the board with late game feat.

  4. I’ve actually had a very similar thought a few times, but mine were all based on the Witch Coven. Would double Krakens + soul hunters work better with the teenagers and their ball monster?
    Cycling infernal machine is quite possibly just as useful as dark guidance (but with added range) and the feat is just about as useful as defensively as Skarre’s. Just a thought.

    • I agree with HeroZero (in the post below). The WCoG are tricky broads that benefit immensely from one brute, but when going double Krakens they miss out on many of their more interesting tricks.

      pSkarre with double Kraken isn’t tricky, it’s just brute force, and pSkarre herself can finish a game if needed, where the WCoG can’t. The great thing about this game though, is that everyone can be wrong, and I would love to hear about your results with the setup :)

  5. It’s an interesting thought but no.coven is not as viable as skarre here. It’s not just the huge accuracy buff or the feat turn. It’s about the viable caster that turns krakens offensively into “kill two full health heavies a turn” threats.

    • Dang hit enter too fast.
      The reason that pgaspy and double kraken works is largely due to parasite and scything touch hot swapping and his feat. Also gargossals and BoX make infantry weep. Sorry no in fact you die if you engage me, while I engage you.

  7. I think pGaspy isn’t that good at feeding 2 Kraken with FOC and maintaining Parasite and Scything Touch.
    Ok, you can get a bonus of +5 to DMG every round, while pSkarre can do this only on one round (feat turn). But she has Dark Guidance AND her FOC fabrication.

  8. It is better than you think. And Focus is never an issue on turns it matters. It just plays differently than pskarre.

    I like Double WWS + more solos like pistol wraiths

    Past RAGMAN is a double krakens wet dream.

    • Hmm looks eerily similar to a list I posted on here, just with mcthralls…so of course I’m going to say it looks tight.
      I still prefer the mcthralls vs necrotects. Mcthralls under Skarre’s feat can and will break a heavy per 4 on charge. 8 kill a colossal… So there is that.

  11. Have you tried skarre2 with double krakens? It would be a pinch for focus but black spot could be detrimental with two walking cannons
