Wraith Witch Deneghra: 4

The game I had last night was probably the most lopsided game in years. The list performed exactly as planned, and even an Old Witch list couldn’t really hurt it. Cygnar would be able to deal with most of it, but the combination of Wrong Eye & Snapjaw with two Helldivers is brutal.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
– Helldiver
– Helldiver
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
General Slaughterborn
Gorman di Wulfe
Machine Wraith
Machine Wraith
Skarlock Thrall
Warwitch Siren
Warwitch Siren
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

His list was definitely short a set of A&H, which we talked about after the game. Other than that it was pretty scary, and much like the list that has run me over twice now, buuut this version was designed to withstand just such a list (the white medium base with writing on it is Tartarus, whom I had forgotten AGAIN, because he’s to tall to be in my Cryx infantry drawer and resides with the jacks where I keep forgetting him).

Zevanna Agha, the Old Witch of Khador
– Behemoth
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Kayazy Assassin Underboss
Winter Guard Rifle Corps (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Gorman di Wulfe
Kovnik Jozef
Sylys Wyshnalyrr

I had the first turn, and ran up. He ran up, and I figured he hadn’t really ever played against eDeneghra before, since his Kayazy Assassins bunched up on my right flank. Not being the kind of guy that looks to closely as the gift horse, I ran in an Arc Node (within 5″), moved up to catch just about everything but the Rifle Corps in my feat, and arced in a boosted Hellmouth on the Assassins.

That’s a real nice formation there guys… The last two Assassins promptly and appropriately broke and ran. Then my invulnerable squad moved up some more, while I took care of the stragglers from the Doom Reavers (the ones not affected by my feat) by charging in a Machine Wraith and then spraying it and some doomies with a Siren.

I was finally going to send in Slaughterborn. He was going to hit doomies on 3+ and kill automatically, and for the first time ever he was going to actually Pacman his way through the enemy army. Then I remembered that Murder of Crows is a god damn cloud effect, and Slaughterborn couldn’t actually see the doomies (as he would say in Boondock Saints… FUCK!!! ARSE!!!).

His turn was spectacularly uneventful, with the Rifle Corps killing my Deathripper, and nothing else happening due to poor dice or models that couldn’t move. The Old Witch popped her feat to deny me for a round, and moved MoC over to threaten Gorman (because he’ll die to POW 8 hit nine times out of ten, and I don’t care what averages has to say about it).

I looked at the table. I was so far ahead because of the Hellmouth and a round of being almost immune to reprisals, that only the feat could spoil my day. I knew exactly where the line from her feat was, so it was a small matter to pull all the important pieces back.

I sent in Slaughterborn and he survived the feat hit, but taking another hit every time he moved would be a bad idea so he had to settle for the three doomies he could reach without moving. The Siren grabbed the second Machine Wraith as a target beacon and killed some more doomies, making her abomination check, and managed to not kill my MW in the process (win!).

I walked in Tartarus to hit and debuff Scrapjack (dealing 9 damage), because I learned last game how incredibly destructive that little guy is against infantry, and then I sent in Snapjaw to kill it, but Ze dize wouldz not cooperate! Scrapjack lived though the Arc Node was gone (fail Snapjaw… fails). The Helldivers simply dug in again and awaited the next turn, confident that a full camping eDeneghra wasn’t dying that round.

Behemoth sucker punches Snapjaw with no trouble at alle. Tartarus refuses to die to Grey Lord sprays despite having just six boxes left after the feat hit last round. The Old Witch herself tries her hand at killing him and also fails, leaving him at four boxes, and then something extraordinary happens. The OW has turned her back on Scrapjack, and that means no Avatar of Slaughter because Snapjaw took out the Arc Node.

Frustrated, the three Focus Scrapjack goes for Tartarus but also fails to kill him. At this point I’m giggling in the corner, because usually some random model manages to kill Tartarus with little difficulty, so it’s nice to see him pull through for once. At this point the game is over, but going through the motions we take the final turn.

The OW has Iron Flesh on, and Admonia is out of range (I need Darragh in there), so the Helldivers have to hit DEF 18. The first one buys and boosts a Headbutt but misses. The second hits, knocks her down, and does heavy damage to her with the last Focus. Tartarus is debuffing ARM, so she’s down to 12, and she’s killed by a Siren spraying her. Total losses on the Cryx side:

  • 1 Bane Thrall.
  • 1 Deathripper.
  • 1 Machine Wraith (Friendly Fire).
  • Snapjaw.

We had a good talk after the game, where the words ‘disgusting‘ and ‘frustrating‘ were liberally applied to my list. This is entirely fair as that was 100% intentional, and I really like the concept behind it. I think I need Darragh Wrathe in there though, as threat ranges were a real issue for the list.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
– Helldiver
– Helldiver
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
General Slaughterborn
Gorman di Wulfe
Skarlock Thrall
Warwitch Siren
Wrong Eye
– Snapjaw

I’m unsure about Slaughterborn. He has such destructive potential, he causes Terror, and he’s pretty good at blocking LoS, but he’s also wearing a big old sign that says ‘shoot me please’ in this list, and I’ve never actually gotten him to work in lists where he made sense, so why should he work here. I’ll give him another couple of games, and if he doesn’t behave I’ll turn him into something else.

  1. How did scrapjack have 3 focus after you took out his Cortex?

Also, I’m not sure Killing Spree works like you think vs the Old Witch’s feat – it seems like if you want the attack you have to do the movement, and even if you advance 0 inches it still triggers her feat’s damage. An interesting rules question.

  2. Very frustrating army to play against, that’s for sure.

With the Kayazy gone, and a totally useless Rifle Corps, i felt 20 points behind from turn 2.

Also; I hate Helldivers! I seriously think it is really bad game design to have models that are 100% immune to anything. It reminds me too much of Games Workshop’s stupid and unbalanced rules.

    • The psychological effect of having two little killing machines homing in on your caster at 10″ per turn is pretty gruesome as well. I feel the same way every time Burrowers show up on the other side of the table.

  3. Like I wrote on the previous eDenny post, I have been considering the Helldivers as well :) Seems like an interesting idea I must admit. I might have to do something similar, but with 20 Bane Knights :D

  4. I’d try to take this list on with the following:

    Captain Damiano (*6pts)
    * Vanguard (5pts)
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)
    * Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer (2pts)
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Steelhead Halberdiers (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
Steelhead Heavy Cavalry (Leader and 4 Grunts) (10pts)
Steelhead Riflemen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord (2pts)
    Taryn di la Rovissi (2pts)

I will just need to make sure to put a bullet between in the skulls of both Tart and General to avoid unnecessary infantry deaths. That shouldn’t be too hard with all this shooting.

    • It’s not an automatic loss, that’s true, but you still have most of your list unable to actually shoot anything that matters. I find that there are no lists in the game that cannot be countered though, so it’s always possible to dream up the perfect list to take something out ;)

      • Banes are targeted by ATGM, the jacks should be dealt with by SHR and melee infantry. It’s not just shooting though – you don’t really have any worthy machine wraith targets, the feat is not really crippling for a gunline and the counter-charge will blow most of your stuff apart even with losses suffered beforehand. The Helldivers are countered by SHR or ATGM clustering around the caster, my Trollblood experience should help me here :)
I’m not saying that any list can ever be unbeatable, it’s just nice to see that I have tools to deal with one of the nastiest Cryx casters :)

        • These discussions will never be anything but two people throwing vacuum arguments at each other, but I can tell you that last time someone clustered infantry around their caster I shot a couple, then slammed one of his own infantry into his caster, and killed him.

Clustering infantry is also a great way to lose 8-10 of them to a Hellmouth, and then the Helldivers will wait a turn. Finally there’s been a vote on the PP Cryx forum, and eDeneghra is officially not in our top3 (pDeneghra, eSkarre, and eAsphyxious).

As I said, your list certainly has a chance, maybe even a good one, but I can count on one finger the number of times I’ve encountered Damiano in a tournament, and I’ll have a backup list in case it happens ;)

          • Agree that theorymachine is nice but pointless in the end :)

I’m not much of a fan of that beauty contest on the PP forums. Around 1/2 of Cryx casters are close to OP IMHO, so choosing 3 best ones among them is just expressing personal preference.

  5. Dont mistake poor design for psycological effect.

Burrowers are vastley different in the fact that they spend every 2nd turn on the table.
Having “immune to everything” models is, as jakob states, kinda poor design.
I suppose thats also why we havent seen any since :)

  6. I also need some Specialists for this tournament. In this list that might be.

    Machine Wraith
    Machine Wraith
    Bile Thralls (min)
    Ogrun Bokur

Ogrun Bokur in case of an Eiryss + A&H combo. Machine Wraiths in case of juicy targets. Bile Thralls in case of all melee lists, and that’s done with.

  7. I’ve got to be honest and say I dont think I quite understand the concept of this list…I also have no idea how it matches her spell list. I could use the excuse that it’s 1am and I just got home from work but I dont think sleep will make things any clearer.

On your troubles with gerlack I have also hit the same problem, I’ve been running him with a min squad of gorgers in a 3gaspy list for a while now and they just die to easily. Their potential with 3gaspy is disgusting, mat10 2x p+s 15 hits with gang, carnage and scything touch, then you team them up with gerlack and it seems like a no brainer but I can’t get gerlack or them to perform.

  8. I’m thinking about doing a Witch Coven list as backup. There’s nothing quite like going into a tournament with something you normally lose with. I’ve wanted to try some Incorporeal spam with them for a while, so maybe something like this.

    The Witch Coven of Garlghast
    – Deathripper
    – Deathripper
    – Helldiver
    – Helldiver
    – Erebus
Bile Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders (Leader and 9 Grunts)
    Machine Wraith
    Machine Wraith
    Machine Wraith
    Orin Midwinter
    Pistol Wraith
    Pistol Wraith
    Saxon Orrik
    Skarlock Thrall
    Warwitch Siren
    Warwitch Siren

  9. I’m broken inside… three evening shifts in a row, and then working on a Saturday… I’m proud that I’ve managed not to hit anyone. In an hour it’s over, and I can get home and paint something, like maybe a Reaper for this list.

    The Witch Coven of Garlghast
    – Deathripper
    – Deathripper
    – Helldiver
    – Helldiver
    – Reaper
Bane Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
    – Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Bile Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders (Leader and 9 Grunts)
    Pistol Wraith
    Pistol Wraith
    Skarlock Thrall
    Warwitch Siren
    Warwitch Siren

  10. Lamoron,

I’m a new player playing Cryx i bought the battle box along with a nightmare.Lost my first 3 games as expected. The usual crowd where i play are veteran players. mercs, cygnar, cricle,Khador and everyone but cryx is well represented. I have read all of your battle reports and your lists, adding items to my amazon cart lol.

My question is if im going to dump like 200-300$ in models to build/ copy one of your lists. is there one of yours you would recommend?

  11. Id like to learn the game and how to really play it, Id also like to win tho and not spend money on units ill only use once and realize they suck. You seem to have a lot of table top experience with Cryx. Thats why i came to you for a recommendation on a list.

Any help would be great, Thanks Lamoron
