Wraith Witch Deneghra: 2

Last night I got in two games with the eDeneghra list. It did not work at all as anticipated, and while both opponents were very concerned about it I could see some issues before the games even began. The first game was against Husum and the eHexeris wall of beasts list.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Bile Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Soulhunters (Leader and 4 Grunts)
The Withershadow Combine
Darragh Wrathe
Madelyn Corbeau
Pistol Wraith
Pistol Wraith
Skarlock Thrall
Warwitch Siren
Warwitch Siren

Lord Arbiter Hexeris
– Basilisk Krea
– Cyclops Raider
– Cyclops Raider
– Cyclops Shaman
– Titan Cannoneer
– Titan Gladiator
– Titan Gladiator
Paingiver Beast Handlers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Paingiver Beast Handlers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Venators Slingers (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Extoler Soulward

The game was pretty much in my pocket, I had locked him down and engaged his entire line with Soul Hunters, and I was setup up for a brutal round of slaughter. Then his gladiators began picking up his slingers and throwing them at my Soul Hunters, and Soul Hunters do not like getting hit with POW 12 slingers!!!

That freed up some more models, and suddenly it wasn’t looking so hot. I should have gone for the attrition battle the following round because he camped seven Fury, but I wanted to see what the telefrag was like so I got in there and ported him out to the Bane Thralls. Sadly it wasn’t enough and I left him on 3-4 boxes with Corrosion up, and the final Bile Thrall missed it’s 8+ spray by rolling a seven. Then I got a gladiator to the face and died.

I guess it was poetic justice because Husum had to cut for Fury, leaving him at one box with Corrosion up, which is exactly how our last game ended, except back then he melted. My list was seriously lacking in firepower and I only used my feat to set up a round of punishment instead of helping me inflict some as well, so that was something I wanted to look into. The game was over early so I managed to get another game in with the same list (might as well, since I had no other models with me).

Commander Coleman Stryker
– Ol’ Rowdy
– Stormclad
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages (Leader and 5 Grunts)
– Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Stormblade Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts)
– Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard
– 3 Stormblade Infantry Storm Gunner
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Journeyman Warcaster
Stormsmith Stormcaller
Stormsmith Stormcaller
Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker

Flergh! That’s an unhealthy amount of magical guns and heavy hitters I probably wouldn’t be able to touch for a round. I decided to fake going for scenario and take him down by surprise assassination after softening him up a bit and camping his feat, but all good plans disappear at first contact.

I got a Soul Hunter in on him on my second turn (I had first), which took him by surprise and rolled well to deliver about half his boxes. A round later I got a second (and last surviving) Soul Hunter on him taking him down to one box. I had locked down his list using my feat, and the following round using jammers and Warwitch Sirens + Pistol Wraiths, but I hadn’t really killed anything.

In my fourth turn I sneaked in some shots on Stryker and lucked out with a WSC Dark Fire, but I had several options of getting Corrosion on him and probably winning anyway. I killed a grand total of three models while losing about 80% of mine, but a win is a win!

The list!

Deathrippers did well, and I had one lined up for a good shot at killing Stryker if my spells and shooting failed. Soul Hunters did well again but I think I’ll try a minimum unit for a couple of games, because I find it hard to get value from the full unit. They usually need to hide in order to survive, and there’s rarely enough space for all five of them to gain cover or hide in woods. I really need to remember that they need Ghost Walk to leave combat with Light Cavalry moves because it caused me a LOT of trouble in both games when I forgot.

Bane Thralls need Tartarus in order to pull of an alpha strike. They did well enough when I used the feat to set up a devastating round, but they could have been fighting the round before with Tartarus to help them out. The missing MAT was a huge issue after spending my feat to set up the charge as well. Withershadow was awesome as always. Darragh Wrathe was dice raped but remained awesome despite it.

Pistol Wraiths against Cygnar is usually worth shit, but this time I could force him forward with his heavies and lock them down without automatically losing both of them. The same thing goes for the Warwitch Sirens, who still died despite being engaged and DEF 19 against Gun Mages, when his dice consistently came up at 10+ for 5/7 rolls.

The new list!

I need more guns. The current meta and the SR 2013 scenarios have taken the meta another step towards primarily ranged armies with a few melee/tank elements. In this case it doesn’t have to be crazy amounts since the feat forces him to be more aggressive, but still.

Wraith Witch Deneghra
– Deathripper
– Deathripper
Bane Thralls (Leader and 9 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Soulhunters (Leader and 2 Grunts)
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Madelyn Corbeau
Skarlock Thrall
Warwitch Siren
Warwitch Siren

I’m pretty sure this would work. There’s a tournament in the beginning of February where I can test it in a non character restricted setting, and see how it performs, as long as I get around to painting my last four Nyss Hunters.

  1. The main problem with the revised list is, that I still have no obvious Hellmouth targets. I really wanted a Machine Wraith or two in there…

    • I really don’t like the idea of min Soulhunters. Just feels like wasted points. I’d probably drop them to take something different. Maybe min BW and Sea Hag? Or Mechanithralls and Necrosurgeon, since you can fuel them from the Nyss corpses? Either of these options gives you decent Hellmouth targets.

      • It’s not always a waste of points if it makes the list ‘fit’.

If the two additional Soul Hunters are dead weight I’m actually saving points by removing them, or perhaps those same points buys me four more ranged models which have more synergy with the list.

I feel that making the list ‘fit’ is more important than squeezing every last drop out of your points budget, but I know several people that disagree so it’s not set in stone. It’s also worth a test to see if the theory holds, and if it doesn’t I can always put them back in.

  2. I love edenny and i try to follow character restirictions when building lists even if i dont have to just to keep in practice. My usual edenny list is

    Edenny
    deathjack
    malice
    deathripper
    deathripper
    skarlock
    cylena and nyss hunters
    gorman
    dougal mcnaille
    2 pistol wraiths
    2 warwitch siren
    machine wraith

Its served me quite well but as you said it can be hard to get armour crackers into an edenny list if you’ve built it to win by scenario.

ive actually been toying with the idea of taking out the nyss hunters for boomhowlers and taking a second machine wraith. Really the only reason nyss hunters are even in the list is to deal with models that hide in the trees or behind cover like druids of orboros or MHSF. Her list partner currently is terminus thats why there is no banes or withershadow.
