Tournament: Terminus Vs. Gunnbjorn

Second game in the tournament was against either Gunnbjorn or Calandra. I felt he picked the right caster with Gunnbjorn but both of them would lead to uphill battles on his part. Kriegler has handed me my behind before so while I was confident about the lists I knew I couldn’t slack off on this one.

Captain Gunnbjorn
– Slag Troll
– Troll Impaler
– Dire Troll Bomber
– Dire Troll Bomber
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes
– Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder
Janissa Stonetide
Stone Scribe Chronicler
Troll Whelps
Troll Whelps

It’s what I would call a fairly standard Gunnbjorn list, with the fire power to annihilate my list but lacking the punch to reliably threaten Terminus until he did. Again I won the roll and elected to go first.

The scenario was actually achievable in this game so I wanted to push him hard because of his massive ranged advantage. I had a forest smack in the middle of my zone as a result but Saxon Orrik removes it as a problem so it was alright. I decided to spread out so the 4″ AoE attacks wouldn’t hurt so much, and I needed to control both flags to force him to Focus on killing Terminus instead of winning on scenario.

That was actually my game plan from the beginning because I wanted him to go for a very unlikely attempt on Terminus instead of working his way through my army, and the best way to do that was to go for scenario myself while pushing Terminus in his face. I wasn’t entirely sure he would go for it though but the way he advanced seemed to indicate it and he moved everything straight at me and threw some long ranged bombs that missed.

To hell with it, I’ll run up and force it. I didn’t think he had the juice to pull it off in his list and I just steamrolled up in his face and double dared him. If he rolled some spectacular dice I would lose and if he didn’t it would be over for him. Darragh Wrathe parked down back and popped Beyond Death with Madelyn in tow so he couldn’t go to town with melee either, and I sat back to watch the fireworks.

Janissa slides the front of my shield away (there goes three pawn targets) and the entire Troll army unloads on Terminus or his shield. After the smoke clears Terminus is left standing in a desolate crater while brushing of bits of Banes and Biles, but with 18/20 boxes left there was trouble to be had for the Trollbloods. Madelyn moves him up into the pile of Nyss Hunters and the fun begins.

Hello Mr. Terminus… you mind me blowing up right behind you? The Bile Thrall blew up almost an entire unit of Nyss Hunters within 2″ of Terminus and he put them in his little cages.

The Bane Thralls cleared out Janissa or Terminus would have been stopped in the middle of his charge, and Terminus came in with his feat up and Gunnbjorn made some funny sounds and died. I forgot to grab a control point when I did so I hoped that wouldn’t matter in the end.

Next up was Mads O and his Retribution project.

  1. I’ve been following your Terminus matches for a while now, and though I am a relatively new player, the first thing I would do would be to field Eiryss, if my faction allowed it. I haven’t seen any of your opponents take her, but I might not be looking carefully enough. Would Eiryss be a threat to Terminus? or would sac pawn be more than good enough to deal with her?

  2. I actually don’t know why they rarely bring her, but as you’ve guessed she makes almost no difference against Terminus. He has nothing worth dispelling, is extremely hard to hit with her bolt, and getting close enough to stab him usually means a free soul for Terminus instead.
