A while back I was asked about my lists performance against other Cryx lists. I mulled it over and decided that eAsphyxious was my hardest opponent, and possibly the hardest opponent in the game for my list (original post here).
I can’t take him down with attrition, I can’t declare a charge on him, and if the player is smart enough to avoid placing anything near him I’m in trouble. (…)
Terminus doesn’t handle the Spectral army very well either (…) His Bile Thrall shenanigans are better than mine (…) and his clouds are murder on my advance.
So last night I had an opportunity to see if it was as bad as I thought it would be. Mr. D’Souza had kindly agreed to field eAsphyxious and I was fairly certain I was going to lose badly. We ended up playing the scenario without reinforcements as my opponent didn’t bring any.
Lich Lord Asphyxious
Bane Knights (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Bane Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Bile Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
I brought my ETC list as usual. I won the roll and chose to go first. This was a mistake on my part since I gave him the initiative in favor of a more reliable camp, but since eAsphyxious negates the “Taking the hit” way of stealing it back (with his feat) I screwed myself over.
I figured out I was screwed when I began deployment and blamed it on a long day at work, but things should be salvageable if I did it right. I deployed for a massive push to the left zone while sending my heavies out to the right zone across from his Bane Knights (Erebus outside the control area actually wasn’t so bad).
This might sound like a really bad idea but the only way I could see this working was to pull them in and blow them up with Bile Thralls while praying I could somehow stop or survive his feat. If I managed to nuke all his Banes and survive his feat I would be golden.
This is me losing the initiative. I didn’t make it into the zone and he did. We have comparable speeds and he’s actually a little bit faster, he has Buffers (Caustic Mists), he can “Take the hit” as well as I can, and I gave him the initiative by choosing to go first (stupid). Time to salvage what I can!
I shuffled up and started praying. The Machine Wraiths tried blocking charge lanes to Snapjaw to at least force the Pistol Wraiths to do something other than locking Erebus down. I also moved Terminus up to block him from scoring… bad idea.
Hello Bane Thralls, how did you get in there? Oh that’s right he had Tartarus as well. It could have ended there but it didn’t as Terminus came through with just 8 damage to show for the effort.
His Knights didn’t do much, and the Pistol Wraiths shot a couple of Machine Wraiths. I was beginning to feel a little bit optimistic at this point since I could wipe a significant part of his army now, but then I remembered his feat. Still quitting is for quitters and your not out until the final box is marked.
Melt you wannabe god following bastards! 3x Bile Thralls, 5x bane Thralls, a Pistol Wraith, and 4x Bane Knights sizzled and popped, the Bane Thralls cleaned house while WSC moved up to block the inevitable counter punch.
My might plan was to run up Snapjaw and threaten a free strike on eAsphyxious but I completely forgot about the second little part of Hellbound and didn’t make it in. Erebus killed another couple of Knights but then the worst part of the game came up: his turn.
Oi, you’re supposed to be dead, not parked in front of a Parasited Terminus with nothing in front of him… cheating Bane Knights. He blew up my shield with his Bile Thralls, then nuked some of his own models, then charged up and popped his feat. Terminus made it through roughly half of the feat models before calling it quits.
That was more or less exactly what I thought would happen but I had to see how bad it would actually be. He was faster than me, he had the same ability to take a hit and strike back (Spectral Legion), he had buffers that worked against me (Caustic Mists), and a counter to my main assassination pieces (Hellbound).
It didn’t help that I messed up and gave him the initiative before we even began but I’m not sure it would have made any difference and I honestly can’t see my self winning that match-up.
If I had to do it again I would try camping behind Erebus/Snapjaw/Darragh all the way up and hope my opponent messes up. It would look really silly but it might work. This is the first time in my many many games with Terminus that I felt I was at a disadvantage I couldn’t play around, but at least I know what to tell my captain at ETC: Don’t ******* let me go up against eAsphyxious.
